Prior to 1905, there was no state-wide method of recording deaths in California. Until that time, many cities and counties kept their own records. Some cemeteries also kept records.

The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society published a 3023-entry database of cemetery records from parts of Alameda County in 2004. The book is Pre-1905 Death Index, Alameda County, California, David Abrahams, Project Leader. The Web page at:

Our Publications

describes the book and how to order it. The full text of the book also appears on the L-AGS Web site at

Pre-1905 Cemetery Reords for Alameda County, California

Another excellent source of information on early deaths in Alameda County is the series of volumes, Record of Deaths, kept in the Alameda County Courthouse, Oakland, California, and available on microfilm as LDS Film 1376380. In 2007 I finished transcribing the data in Volume C, 1889-1894 from the film. (Volume C actually extends to March 1895.) That transcription contains data on 5217 deaths. It was published in print as Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, from 1889-1894, A Transcription of Volume C, Alameda County Record of Deaths. The book is also described on the Our Publications Web page cited above. It appears in full on the L-AGS Web site at

Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book C, 1889-1894

The present book, Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book D, 1895-1901, is another in the series of transcriptions from the microfilm of Record of Deaths. The Web page Our Publications again describes the book. As of Sepember 8, 2010, the book has not yet been published in print. Full text of the book can be viewed by clicking on either of the links "Browse the Index" or "View the entire index at once" given above.

NOTE: I published the first half of Book D - death records for persons with surnames beginning with A through N - in March 2009. This book combines the previous records with my transcription of records for persons with surnames beginning with O through Z. The transcription of Book D is now complete. Publication in print is forthcoming.

In contrast to most other L-AGS databases, which cover only Murray and Pleasanton Townships of Alameda County, these books contain county-wide data. Unfortunately, the county death records do not specify the residence or place of death of the decedent.

I am pleased to present in this book my transcription of the Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book D, 1895-1901.
