GUEST SPEAKER: Dr. Stephen P. Morse
TOPIC: A Hodgepodge of Lesser-Known Research Tools, and How to Use Them to Increase Your Research Succes. Flyer
DATE: July 14th, 2009 - 7:30PM
LOCATION: Congregation Beth Emek, 3400 Nevada Court, Pleasanton Visitors are Welcome, No Charge
Dr. Morse is well known and admired for his “One-Step Website,” a genealogical research tool that greatly simplifies and enhances the efficiency of many existing on-line database searches. In addition he has developed several other innovative tools that are a great help to researchers.
Dr. Morse’s credentials are very impressive. He was born and raised in Brooklyn New York, and later moved to Paris for a period of time before settling in the San Francisco bay area. He holds electrical engineering degrees from several technical colleges and universities. Several high-tech companies, known for innovation, have employed him. He has taught at several universities, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, and San Francisco State. He has published numerous technical papers, written four textbooks and holds four patents.
One of the highlights of his technical career was the development of the Intel 8086 Microprocessor. The 8086 made the PC, as we know it today, a reality.
Dr. Morse’s brilliance and innovation is also having a very positive impact in genealogical research. He continues to focus on the development of new “tools” that make searching databases much more user-friendly and effective.
His presentation at this meeting will focus on using some of the lesser-known tools and programs that he has developed to increase the effectiveness of your research. Some of these may be just what you are looking for to help you tear down that brick wall.
This is one program you won’t want to miss.
These are miscellaneous research tools that may be very useful to you in your research, but you may not be aware that they exist. Stephen Morse has a well known web site, http://www.stevenmorse.com.

Leader: Kay Speaks, tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org
Instructors: Kay Speaks & Sue Johnston
Topic: Chapter 11, Working with sentences in narrative reports
Users will find TMG has many options to customize their workspace to best fit their personal preferences, experience level, computer equipment, and the specific activities being undertaken. Multiple layout screens can be tailored to your work habits, as well as the screen size and arrangement of the layout. You can use colored accents to identify different branches of your ancestors, create custom toolbars and much more.
TV-TMG classes use Terry Reigel’s new A Primer for The Master Genealogist book written for Version 7. Read about the book at http://reigelridge.com/press/primer.htm. With the aid of a digital projector, Kay and Sue work as an instructional team. We discuss, demonstrate, and brainstorm best practices of the software using a hands-on method. We learn TMG's features by actually entering samples of the lesson into a TV-TMG class practice database. Each monthly session is like a three-hour TMG workshop.
Guests are always welcome at our meetings. Accommodations for laptops are available. If you have a laptop, bring it with you to the meeting. A copy of the group's practice database will be provided to you. A laptop is not a requirement as the lesson will be digitally projected. If you can't stay for the entire 3 hours, come and leave early. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting!
A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Terry Reigel’s book can be purchased from this website. For additional information contact: tvtmg.chair@l-ags.org.
