Our October meeting will focus on citing land records. This could turn into a multi-part meeting, since our land records might come from a county record book or FHL microfilm, or they might come in a nice package from the National Archives. What land record do you have that you want to cite? If it is a county book, we need the state, county, page, and a brief description of the document. If you found it on microfilm, add the FHL microfilm number. If it is a homestead record, we need the legal land description, name, and document number. Are you trying to cite a document you found on the GLO Land Patent Search web site http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/? Post the name and the document number. Do you have a surrendered bounty land warrant from the federal government or a state? We need the name, document number, etc. Perhaps you found a digital image on Footnote or an abstract on an USGenWeb site. Post the details and we'll all try to come up with a good template. Mills covers these records in the following sections: 10.1-10.21, pp. 497-514 and 10.28-10.29, pp. 520-521. Bookmark the following QuickCheck Models: pp. 488, 494-496. If you are working with federal records, be sure to read these sections: 11.22-11.31, pp. 582-595. TV-TMG registered members may visit the group’s TV-TMG private blog to post some of their land records for possible use during our October workshop. Kindly R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend the meeting and indicate if you will bring a laptop. Meetings are a cooperative experience where TV-TMG users will have the opportunity to lead one of the classes on a volunteer basis. Let us know if you have a favorite source citation, you would like to present. Be sure to check the meeting date and time each month for possible changes due to scheduling conflicts of the instructors. Do not forget to check our blog, the “Tri-Valley TMG User Group” at http://tvtmgug.blogspot.com/. This is a great place to record our citation decisions, post notes and ideas from the meeting, and ask and answer questions. If you have not received an invitation to join the blog readership, please e-mail Sue Johnston at tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org. Guests are always welcome at our meetings; however, we may not be able to accommodate the use of your laptop as desktop space is reserved for registered TV-TMG members. TV-TMG users should bring their laptop and power cord if possible. The class is currently using TMG version 7. A copy of the group's practice database is provided on our blog. Please download the newest version prior to each workshop. A laptop is not a requirement, as the lesson is digitally projected. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting or on our blog. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! Resources: A free demo version of the software may be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Study Group meetings will resume Thursday, January 27, 2011. Topic: Ancestry's Military Records: A Huge Resource As this is the final Study Group meeting for 2010, I thought we should have an interesting topic where L-AGS Study Group members could share their new discoveries through the Study Group Forum until our next meeting in January. At our October meeting, we will discuss how to easily access all of Ancestry’s military databases and find out which research methods return the best results. Ancestry is constantly adding to their military resources. As of this writing, Ancestry has 1,210 different designated “military” collections. Can you determine which collections are new and which recently updated? In what other record types can you find military information other than Ancestry’s military and census collections? Did you know there are at least four other non-military collections that contain military casualty information? Which foreign countries have burials of U.S. military found within Ancestry’s website? Please RSVP if possible so we can make certain we have enough handouts. Did you forget to RSVP? Please come anyway as this is going to be a very informative meeting! Do you have a genealogy brick wall? Let the Study Group help you brainstorm your research options. Use our L-AGS Study Group forum for any genealogy topic discussion or computer interest questions. L-AGS has many knowledgeable researchers willing to share their expertise! Give them the opportunity to help you by e-mailing your questions to the L-AGS forum at study.group@L-AGS.org. Please send your suggestions for future Study Group meetings to study.chair@L-AGS.org. We would appreciate your input and feedback. ========================================================================== Summary of L-AGS Board meeting Sept. 18, 2010 The L-AGS board passed the motion to approve the expenditure of $60 for a 3 month subscription to an internet membership survey. The design of the questions and format will be done during October. Members will be notified when ready to be accessed on-line. If you have specific concerns you’d like to have addressed in a survey, please be in touch with Kevin Gurney, membership VP. Another motion passed was that L-AGS will be a participant in the Tri Valley Heritage month long event in October 2011. Dick Finn and Kay Speaks will fill out the application to participate. We are encouraged to participate with the Libraries, Museums and other venues that will be involved. Mary Dillon is our contact for details as they develop. The message will be the awesome History the tri-Valley has and the organizations that can publicize it. There is a Family History Expo taking place on October 8 and 9 at Alameda County Fairgrounds. If members have signed up for classes and workshops, their help at a booth will be welcomed when they are not in one of the sessions. Mary Dillon has materials and more information on what can be expected during the two days. Contact www.FHExpos.com for more details.
