At our September Study Group meeting we will explore the different links found on this massive website. A demonstration of navigating through quick links to census images, church records, court cases, digital map library, posting queries, index of state pages, lineage researchers, maiden names and naming patterns, marriage project, obituary project, old occupations, tips for finding obituaries, tombstone transcription project, archives newsletter, archives search engine, volunteering, and accessing the WorldGenWeb. We’ll also search by different levels of locations and how to search “unknown counties.” A cheat sheet with quick links to the above areas will be provided as a handout. Although not a requirement to attend meetings, if you can R.S.V.P. to study.chair@L-AGS.org it will help to determine the number of handouts required. Have a genealogy brick wall? Let the Study Group help you brainstorm your research options. Use our L-AGS Study Group forum for any genealogy topic discussion or computer interest questions. L-AGS is blessed with people willing to share their knowledge and expertise! E-mail the forum at: study.group@L-AGS.org. Please send your suggestions for future Study Group meetings to study.chair@L-AGS.org. We would appreciate your input and feedback. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tri-Valley TMG Users Group The Master Genealogist Software Date: Saturday, September 25, 2010 (NOTE CHANGE OF DATE) Meeting Time: 9 a.m. - Noon Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110, Pleasanton, CA 94566 After Meeting Lunch Meet Up: Rage Super Burgers, Bernal & Valley, Pleasanton Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Pls-KollCenter.html Chair: Kay Speaks, tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org Instructors: Sue Johnston and Kay Speaks Topic: Citing Family History Library Microfilm TV-TMG September Challenge In September, we will continue to use Elizabeth Shown Mills’ book Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Using the 2007 and 2009 edition of Evidence Explained, we will discuss citing FHL microfilm. General issues are covered on pages 53-57 and pages 130-132, and a basic QuickCheck Model can be found on page 103. Note, there are many more issues and examples scattered throughout Evidence Explained. This month, our blog editor is looking for examples. If you have found evidence on a FHL microfilm, please post the film number and item of interest to the blog. Add your own citation, if available, or simply let the group experiment. We will concentrate on the record types we have already covered—cemetery records, vital records, books, and censuses. If you missed our August meeting, don’t forget to download the current sample database and new source citation examples. Kindly R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend the meeting and indicate if you will bring a laptop. Meetings are a cooperative experience where TV-TMG users will have the opportunity to lead one of the classes on a volunteer basis. Let us know if you have a favorite source citation, you would like to present. Be sure to check the meeting date and time each month for possible changes due to scheduling conflicts of the instructors. Do not forget to check our blog, the “Tri-Valley TMG User Group” at http://tvtmgug.blogspot.com/. This is a great place to record our citation decisions, post notes and ideas from the meeting, and ask and answer questions. If you have not received an invitation to join the blog readership, please e-mail Sue Johnston at tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org. Guests are always welcome at our meetings; however, we may not be able to accommodate the use of your laptop as desktop space is reserved for registered TV-TMG members. TV-TMG users should bring their laptop and power cord if possible. The class is currently using TMG version 7. A copy of the group's practice database is provided on our blog. Please download the newest version prior to each workshop. A laptop is not a requirement, as the lesson is digitally projected. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting or on our blog. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! Resources: A free demo version of the software may be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Mills’ book may be purchased online from any of the following websites, plus many other websites: Amazon, Wholly Genes, Footnote and Ancestry. For additional information contact: tvtmg.chair@l-ags.org. Roots Tracer is now being via e-mail to member who request it and to organizations that will accept it. Cost of printing and stamps has decreased. Tri-Valley Heritage Council is in the first stages of planning a major event in all three counties for November 2011. L-AGS Board will be discussing our participation and application at the September 28th Board meeting. All are welcome. The Roots Tracer is always looking for new articles. For November 2010 the theme will be veterans you have found or any writing you may wish to put together about the Wars of our country. Try to get something together and get help if needed soon. Kay Speaks continues to host the TMG and Study Groups, which are held regularly and are a good source of inspiration and searching the internet. See her column now in the Roots Tracer quarterly. In the spring some historical newspapers from Pleasanton Library, the Museum on Main and other sources were digitized with funds from L-AGS and are currently on a DVD. The Computers at the Pleasanton Library, which will be changing in the next few months, will still not play the DVD. Patrick Lofft has said he will transfer that data to 5 or more CD’s which will be available at the Pleasanton Library to use in the Genealogy section. Notice will go out when that is done. A survey of L-AGS members has been discussed and come to a standstill. There will be further efforts to get this on the internet for members to express their involvement, or lack thereof as well as give the organization an idea of how our members are doing with their family searches, locally, on the internet, on trips to faraway places or even to Salt Lake City. Membership stands at 191 memberships representing 236 persons. Attendance at general meetings has been floating around 40 -50. The Nominating Committee will be appointed in the next month. If interested in helping in this process, please be in touch with Barbara Huber at 2bjran@verizon.net or 2bjran@att.net. This is your organization. Make it part of your life. ========================================================================== PRESERVE YOUR STORIES IN THE ROOTS TRACER Our Roots Tracer offers all members the opportunity to preserve the stories of their families in print.
