XXX-XXXX XXXX@wecare.net Dick Finn, 2010 L-AGS Program Chair ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tri-Valley TMG Users Group The Master Genealogist Software Date: Saturday, January 16, 2010 Time: 9 a.m. - Noon Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110, Pleasanton, CA 94566 Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Pls-KollCenter.html Leader: Kay Speaks, tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org Instructors: Kay Speaks & Sue Johnston Topic: Chapter 16—Projects and Data Sets The Final Chapter of Terry Reigel’s Primer! TMG has a powerful feature found in few if any other genealogy program—your data is contained in Projects, each containing one or more Data Sets. Unlike other genealogy programs in which you can only open one Data Set, or “file,” at a time, TMG allows you to open, view, and compare multiple Data Sets within a given project. You can also create separate subsets of your data. It is important that you understand the terms and how Projects and Data Sets relate to each other. Chapter 16 is the last chapter in the Tri-Valley TMG Users Group course using Terry Reigel’s book, A Primer for The Master Genealogist, copyright © 2008, as the class textbook. Sue Johnston, Kay Speaks and the TV-TMG Users Group thank Terry for allowing us to use his Primer and to quote his chapter descriptions during this course. His Primer will continue to be a valuable reference tool for our group as we move forward with our next TMG learning project. Terry, it has been a great learning experience! Our next TMG course will be based on Elizabeth Shown Mills’ book Evidence Explained: Citing History Sources from Artifacts to Cyberspace. Sue and Kay will select a specific citation from the book and provide a sample case study using the type of citation selected-for example a pension record. We will explore, discuss and enter the case study data into our TV-TMG sample project. This will be another unique TV-TMG learning experience! TV-TMG classes use Terry Reigel’s new A Primer for The Master Genealogist book written for Version 7. Read about the book at http://reigelridge.com/press/primer.htm. With the aid of a digital projector, Kay and Sue work as an instructional team. We discuss, demonstrate, and brainstorm best practices of the software using a hands-on method. We learn TMG's features by actually entering samples of the lesson into a TV-TMG class practice database. Each monthly session is like a three-hour TMG workshop. Guests are always welcome at our meetings. Accommodations for laptops are available. If you have a laptop, bring it with you to the meeting. A copy of the group's practice database will be provided to you. A laptop is not a requirement as the lesson will be digitally projected. If you can't stay for the entire 3 hours, come and leave early. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Elizabeth Shown Mills book can be purchased from a number of websites including http://www.Amazon.com. For additional information contact: tvtmg.chair@l-ags.org. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Study Group Meeting Date: Thursday, January 28, 2010 Time: 7:30 p.m. - 9 p.m. Location: LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore, CA Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Liv-FHC.html Study Group Chair: Kay Speaks Topic: U.S. Passport Applications Passport applications can be excellent sources of genealogical information especially for foreign-born individuals. The Department of State has issued passports to American citizens traveling abroad since 1789, but did not have sole authority to do so until August 23, 1856, when Congress passed an act prohibiting other governmental entities, such as state and judicial authorities, from issuing passports. Foreign travel in the nineteenth century was much more common than one expects per the National Archives. Come to the January L-AGS Study Group meeting to learn more about U.S. Passport Applications and how they can help your genealogy research! Have a genealogy brick wall? Let the Study Group help you brainstorm your research options. Don't forget to use our L-AGS Study Group forum for your genealogy topic discussion or computer interest questions. L-AGS is blessed with people willing to share their knowledge! E-mail the forum at mailto:study.group@L-AGS.org. You can also post any suggestions for future Study Group topics or computer related questions. ============================================================== U P C O M I N G C O N F E R E N C E S A N D S E M I N A R S ============================================================== NGS National Genealogical Society FAMILY CONFERENCE Salt Lake City, Utah - Salt Palace April 28 - May 1, 2010 CGS also organizes the Tenth Annual CGS Salt Lake City Tour, April 21-28, 2010, that precedes it.
