L-AGS NEEDS ROOTS TRACER EDITOR AND COMPOSITOR Jane Southwick, editor of our quarterly publication, The Livermore Roots Tracer, and George Anderson, the compositor, have worked hard on the magazine for over four years. Editor (with the help of the current assistant editors): Solicits articles, Remains on the alert for potential articles during general meetings and meetings of special interest groups, Judges the suitability of submitted articles for the Tracer, Possibly rewrites submitted articles,, Edits articles for clarity and precision, Generally ensures the articles will meet the needs of the membership and reflect favorably on the public image of L-AGS, Time requirements: approximately two to four hours daily during the last two weeks of January, April, July and October, which should be left free of travel on the person's calendar. Compositor (Layout person): Maintains a good rapport with the editor (as above) and the publisher (as follows), Possesses a computer with word-processing (currently using MSWord) and e-mail software, Produces the print-ready copy and forwards it to the publisher. The nominal deadline for delivering the print-ready copy to the publisher is the first of the month of publication, namely, the first of February, May, August and November. "At the celebration, it was also announced that Barbara Hempill and Ken Mercer had won this year's Ed Kinney Community Patriot awards. The awards are named for Mr. Kinney, a respected civic leader and former mayor and City Councilman, who died in 2005. Mercer, also a former mayor, was honored for his "influence on the destiny of Pleasanton." During his 10 years on the council, as mayor and as a civic leader before and afternhis government service, Stoneridge Shopping Center, Hacienda Business Park and Pleasanton Sports Park were planned and developed. Today, Mercer is president of the ValleyCare Health System Foundation. Hempill was honored for her work in securing decent housing for senior citizens, low-income families and the disabled both in Livermore, where she worked for 21 years, and in Pleasanton, where she and her family have lived since 1971. Most Tags can have one or two Principals. Those are the one or two people most intimately involved in the event. Any number of other people can be attached to the Tag as Witnesses. For example, the Witness feature allows you to include in a single Tag any of the following: • All the members in a census household. • Family members who immigrated together. • The executors and heirs named in a will. • The minister and attendants at a wedding. • The pallbearers in a funeral. TV-TMG classes use Terry Reigel's new A Primer for The Master Genealogist book written for Version 7. Read about the book at http://reigelridge.com/press/primer.htm. With the aid of a digital projector, Kay and Sue work as an instructional team. We discuss, demonstrate, and brainstorm best practices of the software using a hands-on method. We learn TMG's features by actually entering samples of the lesson into a TV-TMG class practice database. Each monthly session is like a three-hour TMG workshop. Guests are always welcome at our meetings. Accommodations for laptops are available. If you have a laptop, bring it with you to the meeting. A copy of the group's practice database will be provided to you. A laptop is not a requirement as the lesson will be digitally projected. If you can't stay for the entire 3 hours, come and leave early. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Terry Reigel's book can be purchased from this website. I'm often asked, "Why don't you have a Study Group meeting where you show how you find all those things that you share with us?" My response has always been because no one will come to the meeting! At our August meeting we shall see how many of you want to crawl inside Kay's head and see how it works! I'll demonstrate some of my personal search techniques and share some little known or hidden Internet research treasurers that I've discovered along the way. We'll also cover some of my favorite PC shortcuts, tips and how-to's for Word and Excel. This has got to be what I would imagine a blind date feels like-will you be there? Have a genealogy brick wall? Let the Study Group help you brainstorm your research options. Don't forget to use our L-AGS Study Group forum for any genealogy topic discussion or computer interest questions. L-AGS is blessed with people willing to share their knowledge! E-mail the forum at mailto:study.group@L-AGS.org. You can also post any suggestions for future Study Group topics or computer related questions.
