Among the 37,000 US troops killed in the war, as many as 10,000 mistakes were found in the records about them, according to a non-profit research organization. The story appears in the Fort Worth Star-Telegram of 24 Jun 2009 at: http://www.star-telegram.com/804/story/1452677.html EARLY KENTUCKY LAND RECORDS NOW ON LINE - I just returned from a class at Samford University in Birmingham, AL (Jane Southwick and I attended together, but different classes). My class was how to research early land records and one of the lecturers during the week was Kandie Adkinson, Administrative Supervisor for the Kentucky Secretary of State's Land Office. She informed us that Kentucky is in the process of digitizing all their early land records and posting them on www.sos.ky.gov/land/search/. This site is a direct link to the various online searches. Anyone with ancestors in Fincastle Co., VA or Kentucky may be able to find their land patents on this site. They are continuing to add records, so if you don't find something now, continue to check back. Now if only all states would do this.... Morse TOPIC: A Hodgepodge of Lesser-Known Research Tools, and How to Use Them to Increase Your Research Success DATE: July 14, 2009 - 7:30 p.m. LOCATION: Congregation Beth Emek, 3400 Nevada Court, Pleasanton Map to Church: http://www.L-AGS.org/maps/Pls-BethEmek.html Dr. Morse is well known and admired for his "One-Step Website," a genealogical research tool that greatly simplifies and enhances the efficiency of many existing on-line database searches. In addition he has developed several other innovative tools that are a great help to researchers. Dr. Morse's credentials are very impressive. He was born and raised in Brooklyn New York, and later moved to Paris for a period of time before settling in the San Francisco bay area. He holds electrical engineering degrees from several technical colleges and universities. Several high-tech companies, known for innovation, have employed him. He has taught at several universities, including UC Berkeley, Stanford, and San Francisco State. He has published numerous technical papers, written four textbooks and holds four patents. One of the highlights of his technical career was the development of the Intel 8086 Microprocessor. The 8086 made the PC, as we know it today, a reality. Dr. Morse's brilliance and innovation is also having a very positive impact in genealogical research. He continues to focus on the development of new "tools" that make searching databases much more user-friendly and effective. His presentation at this meeting will focus on using some of the lesser-known tools and programs that he has developed to increase the effectiveness of your research. Some of these may be just what you are looking for to help you tear down that brick wall. This is one program you won't want to miss. Derrell Bridgman, First Vice President, Programs program.chair@L-AGS.org For a formatted version of this announcement, see: http://www.l-ags.org/temp/general-meeting-2009-07-14.pdf To find out more about Dr. Morse refer to his website http://www.stevenmorse.com ------------------------------------------------------------- Tri-Valley TMG Users Group The Master Genealogist Software Date: Saturday, July 18, 2009 Time: 9 AM - Noon Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110, Pleasanton, CA 94566 Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Pls-KollCenter.html Leader: Kay Speaks, tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org Instructors: Kay Speaks & Sue Johnston Topic: Working with Sentences in Narrative Reports - Chapter 11 of Terry Reigel's "A Primer for The Master Genealogist" TV-TMG classes use Terry Reigel's new A Primer for The Master Genealogist book written for Version 7. Read about the book at http://reigelridge.com/press/primer.htm. With the aid of a digital projector, Kay and Sue work as an instructional team. We discuss, demonstrate, and brainstorm best practices of the software using a hands-on method. We learn TMG's features by actually entering samples of the lesson into a TV-TMG class practice database. Each monthly session is like a three-hour TMG workshop. Guests are always welcome at our meetings. Accommodations for laptops are available. If you have a laptop, bring it with you to the meeting. A copy of the group's practice database will be provided to you. A laptop is not a requirement as the lesson will be digitally projected. If you can't stay for the entire 3 hours, come and leave early. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com.
