Announcement

Membership renewals should be paid before January 1.
Dues are $18 for individuals and $25 for families. You
may become a Patron of L-AGS for $40 and a Benefactor
for $100. Names of Patrons and Benefactors are posted
in four consecutive issues of the Roots Tracer. To
renew, you may hand your payment to the Business
Manager (Frank Geasa) or to the Membership Chairman
(Marilyn Cutting or Jean Lerche), or send your check

Subject: Creating a Web page with FTM

We will also continue discussing what is new with the
new FTM Version 2006.

Bring your own questions (any and all skill levels) and
let us help each other find answers.

The L-AGS Family Tree Maker (FTM) Focus Group meets
(during the school year) the first Thursday of the
month at 7:30 PM at the Almond Avenue School, Room 2,
in Livermore.

Most of our group are FTM users (from beginners to
experts) who discuss problems and solutions, share
successes, answer questions, and in general help each
other with the Family Tree Maker genealogical software.
All persons interested or potentially interested in
Family Tree Maker are invited to attend. For
information on our group please call Dick Finn at 925-
XXX-XXXX or e-mail him at XXXX@wecare.net. Contact
Dick for information about topics to be discussed.

Visitors are welcome and there is no charge to attend.
Bring your questions, comments, and if you have a
laptop with FTM loaded (any version) and/or the FTM
Handbook, you might bring them.

Topic:

      Genealogy Research at the Pleasanton Library

Frank Geasa will give a talk about genealogy research
at the Pleasanton Library. This talk will describe the
Society's collection, what the area looks like, and
where things are located. He will discuss the assets
that are available including the books, computers, CDs,
etc. and the best way to use these assets. He will give
us keys to making their use as easy as possible and
tell what help is available.

Frank is an avid genealogist who feels that his time in
the United States Air Force gave him a perfect
background for genealogy. He did such things as
organizing and maintaining records, was stationed in
Germany near where his great grandmother was from;
learned the German language; completed a BA degree in
International Relations; obtained Armed Forces
Intelligence Training where he learned photo
interpretation which later made recognizing patterns in
genealogy films easier; attended computer school to
learn and teach computer systems; and was given
assignments where analytical ability was critical to
success. After leaving the Air Force he spent more than
20 years in all aspects of computer information systems
and as an independent computer specialist.

      "Using Online Census Indexes: A Comparison of
      "Ancestry and Heritage Quest"

      Susan Goss Johnston

Susan writes:

I graduated from Yale University with a degree in
physics and began working in medical research while
studying voice at Peabody Conservatory. I left both
careers to raise two children. One day, I discovered a
box of old photographs, my children's ancestors, and in
studying those people, found a new vocation. Genealogy
was research that didn't require grant writing! I'm a
graduate of the National Institute on Genealogical
Research, "Advanced Methodology and Evidence Analysis"
at the Samford University's Institute of Genealogy and
Historical Research, and the National Archives' course,
"Going to the Source." After thirty years in Maryland,
I moved to Fremont with my husband in August 2004.
Occasionally, I still head west when I'm supposed to go
east.

Topic: Multimedia and Exhibits

We continue with Chapter 12 of Leo Hoffman's Getting
the Most Out of the Master Genealogist - Multimedia and
Exhibits by Richard Brogger. This chapter addresses
three features of TMG: Exhibit Log, Slideshow Manager,
and Slideshow Viewer. Opinions and information
pertaining to images, file storage, other image
information will be discussed.

Bring a digitized image to add to your personal TMG
Exhibit Log. TMG allows you to attach an image, text,
audio, or video file - almost anything that you can see
or hear on your computer. Capturing information found
on the website will be demonstrated, as well as using a
digital camera for photos and video file storage.
Exhibits can be added to an individual, an event, a
source, a repository or as a general exhibit.
