Presenter: Linda Garrett Member of L-AGS Past Regent of Josefa Higuera Livermore Chapter of DAR Linda writes: "I was born in Wood River, IL, which is about 30 miles northeast of St. Louis, Missouri. My family moved to California when I was almost 7 and I lived in Oakland and Hollister before moving to Livermore the end of 1961. "I met my husband, Jimmie Garrett, while we were both attending Granada High School. He was in the Army when we married and while stationed in Yuma, Arizona, our son Darryl was born. Three years later, our daughter Amie was born and by that time we had moved back to Livermore. Both of my kids are married and between them, I have five grandchildren. "I worked at several interesting jobs, including a bank teller, a church secretary, an optometry assistant, office manager for a Homeopath and a Phlebotomist. "My interest in genealogy began when I wrote to my mother's cousin and asked if she had my grandmother's recipe for Plum Pudding and Hard Sauce. I believe it was passed down to my Grandmother Goldie Clary Cook from her grandmother, Elizabeth Clary, who came to America from Exning, Suffolk County, England about 1857. It turned out Cousin Celia's sister had it and they sent it to me. Celia wrote in her letter that I was eligible for DAR if I was ever interested. Her grandmother, my great grandmother, Celia Harvey Cook, joined in Illinois in 1915. Celia sent me a copy of the application and her certificate and I quickly found a chapter and joined. That was in 1984. "I have been going to Salt Lake in January with my DAR friends for 5 years now and have greatly added to my family data base which is now over 15,000 and includes almost 3000 surnames."
