Bill is a fifth generation Californian. His great-great grandfather led a wagon train to California in 1846 and entrusted the safety of his family and friends to a trail guide who proved to be incompetent and almost cost many people their lives. The Donner Party, following the Harlan Party along a new short-cut through the mountains and deserts of Utah and Nevada, was not so fortunate and lost almost half its members. Once arrived in California members of the Harlan family were active in the battle against the Mexican forces, in the development of San Francisco, in the discovery of gold, in the early gold diggings and in the history of Contra Costa County. Bill has been engaged in research about his family's place in the history of the West for the last 40 years. He is a member of the Board of the Harlan Family National Association which plans to hold its national reunion in Reno to commemorate the 1846 crossing of the Sierras. Bill was an instructor at Diablo Valley College for four decades and spent 15 years as the director of the college's campus in San Ramon. L-AGS STUDY GROUP Thursday, June 16, 2005 - 7:30 PM The third Thursday of the month Leaders: Kay Speakes, George Anderson and Dick Finn Location: LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Liv-FHC.html Speaker: Hector Timourian Topic: "Defining My Family" Hector Timourian considers himself lucky to have grown in multicultural family. He was born in Mexico City; his parents were of Armenian and Mexican descent. His mother's family escaped the Turkish massacres and immigrated to Mexico. He grew up speaking Spanish and Armenian and learned English by the time he came to United States at age of 15. With the help of his mother he has been able to trace some of his family's roots and start a simple genealogy tree. One of the advantages to growing up in a multicultural family is the opportunity to listen to a variety of family stories-Armenian and Mexican stories are as diverse as their foods, and also expressive of their passion and love. Hector always enjoys telling stories, those he learned from his family and those he has created from events in his life. He has now published his first book of stories, Gifts From America. Hector will read from and talk about his book of family stories, Gifts From America-stories reflecting the lives of Armenians who have migrated to the United States. Gifts From America is a self-published book, now available as print on demand-one book at a time. He will explain the many ways now available for publishing without going through a publisher or agent. Hector is a scientist and educator. He earned a PhD degree in biology from UCLA. He worked as a biomedical research scientist in Australia and at the Lawrence Livermore Laboratory. He has taught at California State University in Northridge and Sonoma. When he retired in 1993, Hector started TOPS (Teaching Opportunities for Partners in Science), a program that recruit retired scientists to volunteer in local schools. TOPS is serving schools in Livermore and in the San Joaquin Co. He is married to artist and art teacher Dotty; they enjoy traveling and participating in cultural activities, such as plays, opera and reading. They have two sons who live in Texas, and three grandchildren.
