Presenter: Dr. Ripan Malhi CEO and co-founder Trace Genetics, Inc Dr. Malhi writes: "Gene genealogy is the most universal and verifiable method of tracing genetic lineage. Where the written record stops, gene genealogy offers the ability to scientifically confirm biological relationships, as well as uncover genetic legacies dating back thousands of years. Currently there are three main types of genetic tests available (mtDNA, Y-chromosome and genome-wide) and each test yields different results. "Before choosing to pursue genetic testing it is important to understand how each test works, what information they can provide as well as its informational limitations. Having this knowledge will help you 1) determine if genetic testing can benefit your genealogical research and 2) will also help you decide which test will reveal the greatest amount of information for what you are looking for. "I am the co-founder of Trace Genetics, Inc. I earned my PhD in molecular anthropology from UC Davis. For my dissertation research, I investigated prehistoric population movements in North America using both ancient and modern DNA. Trace Genetics specializes in genetic ancestry testing and houses the world's largest Native American DNA database. My presentation will explain the basic principles of DNA, introduce the different types of ancestry testing available and finally will discuss the benefits and limitations of each." Visitors are welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ GENEALOGY STUDY GROUP Kay Speaks, Leader mailto:study.chair@L-AGS.org Thursday, October 21, 2004 - 7:30 PM Always the third Thursday of the month Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore URL for a map to the church: http://www.L-AGS.org/maps/Liv-FHC.html Program: International Census Records This month I thought we would take a look at what is available on the Internet for census-related sites worldwide. If you don't have the book yet, we'll provide an outline at the meeting. I do recommend this text, as it is well written and very informative.
