We are primarily a group of Family Tree Maker users (from beginners to experts) who discuss/share problems and successes and in general help each other in the use of FTM software. If you have a problem you want to bring up at the meeting, it will help if you post it in advance to: mail to ftm.group@l-ags.org Members owning laptops are requested to bring them to the meeting. Please bring your FTM manual also. Guests are welcome at no charge. All persons interested or potentially interested in Family Tree Maker and related software are invited to attend. ______________________________________________________ Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society General Meeting Date: Tuesday, May 11, 2004 Time: 7:30pm Place: Temple Beth Emek, corner of College Ave. & M Street, Livermore Speaker: Doug Mumma Topic: Can DNA help solve your genealogical puzzles? It has been over 3 years since Doug Mumma made a presentation to L-AGS about his MUMMA surname DNA project and an "update" is appropriate. First he will briefly discuss the fundamentals of DNA testing to refresh everyone's memory. He will discuss the dramatic changes and advances that have occurred in DNA testing since he initiated the "first" DNA Surname project with Family Tree DNA (FTDNA) over 3 years ago. He will use his current results to illustrate the difficulty in interpreting the data provided by DNA testing laboratories. He will also identify what information DNA testing can and cannot provide, since people are often disappointed with the results they receive. He will finish with the conclusions he has determined from the results of his projects. NGS Annual Conference in the States 19-22 May 2004 Sacramento, California Sacramento: A Golden Prospect I'm very excited to be attending the NGS 26th Annual Conference in the States being held in Sacramento this year. Several years ago I traveled to Portland, Oregon to attend the NGS annual conference. It was actually my first national genealogical conference. I was overwhelmed with the powerful speakers, the variety of topics, and the wonderful networking opportunities. And I couldn't believe all the wonderful books, maps, tapes and other merchandise available for purchase. NGS gives very good discounts to their society members when purchasing merchandise at their conference booth. I thought the event to be worth my travel costs (airline ticket, hotel and meals). This year the conference is in our backyard - Sacramento! I do hope you try to attend this year. The link to the NGS conference program is http://www.eshow2000.com/ngs/conf_program.cfm. Check out the program for topics of interest. There are many master presenters which is always a special treat. I hope I'll see you in Sacramento! It's a wonderful way to get rejuvenated and recharge our genealogical batteries. And you get to talk "genealogy" for four solid days! The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We represent those who have spent many decades learning methods and techniques to those of who are just beginning their journey through the archives and old documents. Come learn and share the challenges, joys, and yes, frustrations of this wonderful lifelong hobby. One of the many things we have in common is the willingness to share and help others. We hope that you will be able to join us at our next regularly scheduled meeting in June. We meet the third Thursday of every month Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore, CA ______________________________________________________ Computer Interest Group Jim Lathrop, Group Leader. Speaker: Jim Rogers Topic: "Online Misadventures" Time: Thursday, May 27, 2004 - 7:30 PM Location: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore. We will be in Room 8. For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma We have all heard the horror stories of Trojan Horses and misleading e-mails that try to get you to run malicious software. Jim will relate his experiences with such things. We will spend some time discussing how to avoid the pitfalls. Come and share any experiences you might have had. ______________________________________________________ A New CIG Leader is STILL needed to replace Jim Lathrop: Would you and/or a team of friends please consider this leadership position? Otherwise we may need to "deputize" ALL the CIG members in L-AGS! ======================================================
