We will be in Room 8. For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html Topics: Little Known FTM Commands and Their Use Would each member bring a command to share with our group? Something that works well for you but may not be known by many others. FTM allows us to do many things but it seems that most of us just use a limited number of options - let's open up our use of FTM. We are primarily a group of Family Tree Maker users (from beginners to experts) who discuss/share problems and successes and in general help each other in the use of FTM software. If you have a problem you want to bring up at the meeting, it will help if you post it in advance to: mail to ftm.group@l-ags.org Members owning laptops are requested to bring them to the meeting. Please bring your FTM manual also. Guests are welcome at no charge. All persons interested or potentially interested in Family Tree Maker and related software are invited to attend. For information on our group please feel free to call Richard Finn at 925.XXX-XXXX or e-mail him at XXXX@pacbell.net. =========================================================== L-AGS March General Meeting Time: 7:30pm Date: Tuesday, April 13, 2004 Place: Temple Beth Emek, College Avenue at M Street Speaker: Judy Person Topic: PERSI and Draper Manuscripts PERSI is a real boon to researchers; it's an index by the librarians to all the genealogy magazines at the second-largest (next to Salt Lake FHL) genealogy library in the US, maybe the world. Judy plans to have handouts about that, and also talk about the Draper manuscripts, which have a lot of rare sources about the southern and Midwest states just after the Civil War. We have the Guide in our library, and I'll try to bring out some highlights from both great sources. Judy began working in libraries as a page at San Jose Public in 1957, and worked her way through Pepperdine University Library and the Alameda County Library, ending as a librarian in Pleasanton for 24 years. During that time she helped negotiate room for L-AGS collection in the new building at Pleasanton. She acted as a liaison between L-AGS and the library and the Friends of Pleasanton Library. Judy writes, "We can be proud of our relationship with Pleasanton Library and its Friends, since both are very supportive organizations, and there's never been a cross word." Are you in a quandary? Want to know what to do with all that information? Many of us are gathers of facts, but don't know what the next logical step should be in connecting our information. Fellow researchers Frank Geasa and George Anderson will show us how they personally analyze their data, set time and place to their research, and arrive at logical conclusions. Take your research a step further - join us as we get a glimpse at how these two L-AGS members take an analytical look at genealogical data. George Anderson (3/29/2004): "How do you take that pile of data and find out the truth? It's like the sculptor who was asked how he carved that statue of a horse: he said he just cut away everything that didn't look like a horse. So to find the truth in genealogy, you just cut away everything that is not true." The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We represent those who have spent many decades learning methods and techniques’Ķto those of us who are just beginning our journey through archives and old documents. We're learning about the joys, and yes, frustrations of this wonderful lifelong hobby and passion. One of the many things we have in common is the willingness to share and help others. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore, 7:30 p.m. I do hope you'll mark your calendar for this and future meetings. =========================================================== Tri-Valley TMG Users Group Kay Speaks, Leader Livermore-Amador Genealogy Society Tri-Valley TMG Users Group Date: April 17 (Third Saturday of the Month) Time: 9:00 AM-Noon Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110 Conference Room Pleasanton, CA 94566 We are continuing our in depth study of Sources and Repositories. This month, George Anderson will demonstrate how to put your data on World Connect. If you would like to, bring a GEDCOM file with your data. As always, visitors are welcome. =========================================================== A New CIG Leader is needed to replace Jim Lathrop: The Lathrops are planning to move from our valley. Please consider learning this new job. It should be interesting with both suggestions from other members plus technology with our location near Silicon Valley and the nearby Sandia National Laboratory - Livermore and Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Bring your ideas and also join the L-AGS monthly Board meetings. Not only is this the Computer Interest Group, but also we broaden it to include other related hardware with presentations from the areas of Computer Security, wireless networking, digital photography and scanners. Recently CIG had one of its largest attendances (I counted 31 names) for a presentation titled "Converting 35 mm slides to digital images." A PowerPoint presentation of this can be downloaded at by Doug Mumma.
