I had gotten off the train at a tiny village and managed to find the bus stop, only to learn that the bus did not run on Sundays. I picked up my heavy suitcase and began walking the six kilometers to my destination." Anne Homan will give a talk, illustrated with slides, about her journey to Bavaria and Hesse to follow her family's footprints, then faint with time. Her great-grandparents had left 140 years ago for America. Meeting Subject: Ancestry.com Website Review L-AGS Leader: Kay Speaks Ancestry.com's website indicates they are the largest collection of family history records on the Web. Some of the databases available through Ancestry.com are free and some are associated with a fee. The databases, with news ones added all the time, are as follows: U.S. Census Records & Images available online ( * = indexed censuses). You may search by individual years or by searching "all years": Available databases includes: all years, 1790*, 1800*, 1810*, 1820*, 1830*, 1840*, 1850*, 1860*, 1870* (new), 1880* (new), 1890*, 1900, 1910, 1920*, 1930* (new). If images are available they may be printed and/or downloaded. The My Ancestry tab keeps track of "People I'm Looking For" with the last date modified, relationship and saved links. "Obituary Hunters" allow for search by title, locality and other terms. These terms may include name, keyword, location information, obituary date, age, newspaper title, and other involved family members. Search terms may be for any one specific surname living in a specific city and/or state. Or, you may have a search titled Keelings in Arkansas. I have another requesting notification of all deaths from a very small city. Ancestry will perform a search and notify you when it successfully finds a match when using "Obituary Hunters". The "Search" tab allows for search by U.S. specific states, U.K. & Ireland, Europe, and Canada using specific categories or all categories. Other available databases are: U.K. Census Collection, Birth, Marriage & Death which includes the Social Security Death Index, and Obituary Collection, Immigration Records, Military, Trees & Community, Message Boards, Newspapers & Periodicals, Biography & History, Court, Land and Probate Records, Reference & Finding Aids, and Directories and Member Lists. There are also tabs for Message Boards, and Learning Center. The L-AGS Study Group meets the third Thursday of every month to promote family history research techniques and methodology. Then once you have this information, should you store this information as an internal or external file? Several types of scanners, a digital camera, a digital camcorder, and sound clips will be available for use at this meeting. Those of you who are using it might think about what you like and don't like about this new version - what can you do with 11 you couldn't do with version 10 or earlier? We are primarily a group of Family Tree Maker users (from beginners to experts) who discuss/share problems and successes and in general help each other in the use of FTM software. If you have a problem you want to bring up at the meeting, it will help if you post it in advance to: mailto:ftm.group@l-ags.org Members owning laptops are requested to bring them to the meeting. Please bring your FTM manual also. Guests are welcome at no charge. All persons interested or potentially interested in Family Tree Maker and related software are invited to attend.
