Map to the meeting site Topic "Trevarno and Coast Manufacturing" Speakers Mary Abbott (President Trevarno Road Homeowners Association) and Bob Manaldi (former Executive Coast Manufacturing Company) "Historic Trevarno Estates Livermore, California 1913 — 2003 Trevarno Road In the early 1800’s William Bickford of Cornwall invented the spun rope safety fuse for dynamite. It was used to ignite powder charges in tin mines. In 1831 he perfected the fuse and obtained a royal patent. In 1867 Lemuel Ellsworth came to California to build and manage a fuse plant which eventually became Coast Manufacturing and Supply Company. In 1913 Coast Manufacturing outgrew its Oakland plant. It looked over the hills for a less populated area in which to relocate and found a 310 acre site in Livermore, a sleepy agricultural town of 2,000 people. Trevarno Road was the company town built for Coast Manufacturing management employees. Trevarno is a Welsh word meaning "Head of the Valley." It was the name Bickford’s home in Cornwall. Company housing was badly needed as the farming community of Livermore had no rental houses available. The company took care of everything from changing a lightbulb to adding housing additions as families grew. Three full time gardeners were responsible for the upkeep of lawns and trees. A pattern of community participation was part of the Coast tradition. Members of management served on the Board of Directors of the First National Bank of Livermore, the Rodeo Association, Boy Scouts, Rotary, Chamber of Commerce, and were active in the campaign to build Valley Memorial Hospital. Coast entered the textile industry in 1947 by weaving Fiberglas fabric. The plant was first leased to, then sold to Heel Corporation in the 1960’s. The "Avenue" was sold to a developer in the 1970’s. The first house was purchased in 1976. Twelve houses are individually owned and occupied. The "Little House" and office building at the south east end of the street are owned and maintained by L. A. R. P. D. The City of Livermore recognized the importance of Trevarno by designating it a Historic District in 1976." This information was taken from a brochure received at a banquet and meeting of the Livermore Heritage Guild in September 2003. =========================================================== L-AGS STUDY GROUP Kay Speaks, Group Leader Time: Thursday, October 16, 2003 - 7:30 p.m. Location: LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore (Room 8), Visit http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html for directions. Topic "Search Engines & Effective Genealogical Search Techniques" Leader Kay Speaks October session will be about search engines and effective search techniques. I’m going to ask others to come forward to show us their favorite sites also. In preparation for the October session, I would like members to provide to me their three favorite genealogy search engines — with #1 as your most favored. Also, if you have hints, tips, or challenges with regards to searching on the Internet, please let me know that too. I’ll compile this information and with the use of our data connection we will go online and compare search engine effectiveness. Send your information to study.chair@l-ags.org. The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We represent those who have spent many decades learning methods and techniques to those of who are just beginning their journey through the archives and old documents. Come learn and share the challenges, joys, and yes, frustrations of this wonderful lifelong hobby. One of the many things we have in common is the willingness to share and help others. We hope that you will be able to join us in October. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore, 7:30 PM. I do hope you will mark your calendar for future meetings. Visit http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html for directions. =========================================================== Tri-Valley TMG Users Group Kay Speaks, Group Leader No Meeting in October! Topics will include: using GPS in genealogy, using Elements 2, e-mailing pictures, anything else you would like covered - contact Jim Lathrop with requests . Please bring your appropriate equipment. For what does this ‘alphabet soup’ "GPS" stand? The book "GPS Made Easy" by Lawrence Latham (2nd edition, 1999) includes this in the glossary: "Global Positioning System (GPS): A system of 24 satellites that allows a GPS receiver to determine its position any place in the world. There are two types of receivers: military and civilian. Military receivers are always accurate to about 1 m (3.3 ft). Civilian receivers are made less accurate by Selective Availability. Their accuracy randomly varies between 15 and 100 m (49.2 to 328 ft)." =========================================================== In November we will begin our fall holidays schedule for 2003. The FHC on Mocho Street in Livermore plans to be closed on November 26 — 29, 2003 for Thanksgiving. What about our Genealogy Seminar planned for November 8th? Currently Jim Scofield is scheduled to be the volunteer on duty from 1:00 to 4:00 PM that day. Please don’t hesitate to telephone the Livermore LDS FHC at 443-2750 to check specific times you would like to visit the LDS FHC in Livermore. To avoid finding a genealogical research facility closed on the day when you want to make a visit, it is wise to telephone ahead. From our L-AGS website http://www.l-ags.org some telephone numbers can be found under "Local Libraries & Family History Centers."
