Was there a time when your life took an unexpected turn? What are you most proud of in your life? Everyone has a story that arises from a lifetime of experiences that may be lost forever unless care is taken to preserve them. Learn techniques and questions to draw out the stories that reveal the richness of our human experience. Apply these techniques to videos, sound recordings or writing so that your family history will be available for your children and grandchildren. For the past 7 years, Ray McFalone has been teaching people the simple techniques of how to record their personal histories. For the last 3 years he has been making personal history videos for hospice patients as a hospice volunteer. In his regular life, Ray is an estate-planning attorney in Walnut Creek and Pleasanton. However, our October session will be about search engines and effective search techniques. In preparation for the October session, I would like members to provide to me their three favorite genealogy search engines – with #1 as your most favored. Also, if you have hints, tips, or challenges with regards to searching on the Internet, please let me know that too. I’ll compile this information and with the use of our data connection we will go online and compare search engine effectiveness. Send your information to study.chair@l-ags.org. The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We represent those who have spent many decades learning methods and techniques to those of who are just beginning their journey through the archives and old documents. Come learn and share the challenges, joys, and yes, frustrations of this wonderful lifelong hobby. One of the many things we have in common is the willingness to share and help others. We hope that you will be able to join us in October. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore, 7:30 PM. I do hope you will mark your calendar for future meetings. Visit http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html for directions. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Tri-Valley TMG Users Group Kay Speaks, Leader: tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org Saturday, September 20, 2003 - 9:00 AM to 12:00 AM Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110, Conference Room, Pleasanton, CA 94566. Map to the meeting site: < http://www.L-AGS.org/koll.center.html> Topic: "Using the 'Role' feature of TMG" Leader: Kay Speaks In TMG principals and witnesses in an event may be assigned "roles." For example, Principal 1 in a marriage event may be the Groom and Principal 2 may be the Bride. One of the witnesses may be the Minister. Principal, Witness, Bride, Groom, and Minister are roles. In addition to Principals and Witnesses, the following roles are pre-defined in TMG. Their associated sentence structures can be changed but the roles cannot be deleted. Event type/Predefined Roles Birth/Child Death/Deceased Marriage/Bride, Groom Burial/Interred Divorce/Divorce' (man), Divorcee (woman) Address/Resident TMG allows you to create or delete roles. We will also explore the use of roles in sentence structures. To pose a question or ask for additional information, please send an e-note to tvtmg.chair@l-ags.org. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP Jim Lathrop, Group Leader: computer.chair@L-AGS.org Thursday, September 25, 2003 - 7:30 PM Location: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore. TOPIC: Worms, Viruses, and Other Computer Hazards Speaker: Bill Orvis Bill Orvis has agreed to talk to us about dangers to our computers. Bill is with CIAC at LLNL. These are the people who protect the Labs computers from disasters. With all the publicity about the two worms this last month, it’s a good time to consider what we should be doing to protect our computers. ------------------------------------------------------------------------
