======================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR SEPTEMBER September 1, 2002 ======================================================================== Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker group will meet this week. See details below. ANNOUNCEMENTS Meeting places Contrary to what was announced last month, the L-AGS Study Group meeting for September will be held at the usual site in the LDS Church on Mocho Street in Livermore. See details below. The Family Tree Maker Focus Group and the Computer Interest Group will resume meeting in Sonoma School starting this month. New CDs at the Pleasanton Library Thirteen new genealogy CDs will soon be in the carousels at the Pleasanton Library. They are all World Family Tree (WFT) discs published by Genealogy.com. Previously our collection included all WFT CDs up through Volume 62. The new additions bring the holdings up through Volume 80, except for Volumes 63, 64, 66, 72 and 76. The reason for the gaps is that I bought these CDs on behalf of L-AGS on EBay, most of them for $4.99 each. I bid on the five others but was outbid. The regular price for WFT CDs is $20. We will try to fill in the gaps when the price is right again. ======================================================================== S E P T E M B E R M E E T I N G S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Acting Leader Thursday, September 5, 2002 - 7:30 PM Always the first Thursday of the month Place: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html NOTE THAT WE ARE BACK IN SONOMA SCHOOL FOR OUR MEETINGS Version 10 of Family Tree Maker has just been released. Several years later he arrived in California with his wife and the first of ten children. Following the advice of his good friend Archbishop Alemany of San Francisco, he planted a vineyard and went into the wine business to produce Sacramental wine for the church services of various religious denominations. This church association enabled the winery to continue operation during the years of Prohibition. Three generations have carried on the tradition of wine making from 1883 to the present in the Livermore Valley. James Concannon, grandson of founder, was born and raised in Livermore and attended local schools. He graduated from St. Mary's College with a degree in business administration, later attending U.C. Davis for classes in Enology (wine chemistry). After serving in the Korean War for two years he returned to Livermore and assumed the role of winemaker at Concannon in 1955. Jim continues to be actively involved in the winery as well as serving his community and church in many ways. - - - - - In addition to Jim Concannon, we will also have as our guest Mr. James Lyster from London, England. In advance of his visit to America, a number of our members have been working hard helping Mr. Lyster research his family, who were some of the earliest Irish citizens of Dublin, California in the mid 1800s. We will present our work to Mr. Lyster at our meeting. For information contact Dick Finn at 925 XXX-XXXX or: mailto:president@L-AGS.org. I have been making family history videos as a hobby for about 5 years. For the last two years I have made family history videos for hospice patients on a volunteer basis. "A personal family history video consists of a person reminiscing about the past on videotape. I teach people that it is not a speech or a presentation - it is a conversation on tape about memories of growing up, impressions of people and events from the past and what I call "points of wisdom" - things a person has learned over their lifetime. There are many techniques that I share with the audience that are designed to enhance the quality of the tape. With each passing year the tape becomes a more precious heirloom particularly after the person has passed on. "I do not charge anything for the class. I don't make family history videos for money and I'm not selling anything. I teach this class primarily because it is rewarding and fun. Recently I taught the class at the Concord Senior Center. One of the people who attended suggested that I contact Genealogical/Historical Societies. I thought this was a great idea which led me to contact your organization. The class is new - I've taught it at 2 locations (Orinda Seniors and Concord Seniors) and the reaction has been very positive." - - - - - Please avail yourself of the CIG e-mail forum to post questions or answers: < mailto:cig@L-AGS.org >. As always, our meetings are open to discussions on other "computers in genealogy" subjects. Visitors are welcome. ======================================================================== The Boilerplate We realize that not all L-AGS members have e-mail. "Is there anything breakable in here?" asked the postal clerk. "Only the Ten Commandments." answered the lady. ========================================================================
