===================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR NOVEMBER November 1, 2001 ===================================================================== Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker group will meet this evening. See details below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A N N O U N C E M E N T S Local historian and L-AGS member Gary Drummond has been invited to give the next presentation in the Livermore Library's series on Livermore history. Gary writes: "I will be speaking at the Livermore Public Library on Friday, November 16 at 7:30. The title of my presentation is "Scandals, Scams and 13 Saloons". Now, I know something about a few scandals and a few scams that have occurred over the last 150 years, but I was stumped on '13 saloons'. When I asked one of the librarians where that came from, she said that Barbara Bunshah had suggested it because that was the number of drinking establishments in Livermore in 1876, when the town was incorporated. "So I propose to challenge my audience with a correlation problem - if one knows the town population, the number of saloons and the number of hay barns, each at certain peg points, can a relationship be made over time about the efficiencies in agriculture (requiring less farm labor, who may drink more or less?) and the effect of the temperance movement?" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- RE-UP! The group will meet at 7:30 PM on Tuesday, November 13, 2001, at Congregation Beth Emek, College and "M" Streets, Livermore. The speaker will be Fran Schweitzer of Walnut Creek, an enthusiast for both sewing and genealogy. Fran Schweitzer is a member of the San Ramon Valley Genealogical Society (SRVGS). She has been doing genealogical research as long as she has been quilting. Her long love for fabric and an involvement in sewing switched to quilting in the early 1980s when the popularity of quilting was revived. It became an intense pastime. She will give a brief review of fabric, followed by her family connection to her ancestors through quilts. Fran would like to invite members who have an old quilt (especially a documented one) to bring and share with the group. Fran give this special presentation about two of her favorite hobbies to SRVGS in February 2001 at the LDS Family History Center at Stone Valley Road in Alamo. Many have had one or more quilters among their ancestors. My Mother did not think she had the patience to enjoy quilting even though she liked to sew. But according to one cousin our grandmother did quilt, probably with a group of church ladies. One of grandmother's quilts got passed down but may have been almost worn out. Quilts can represent not only fine crafts but also a "primitive" art in the sense made famous by Grandma Moses. A photo of a family quilt would be a wonderful addition to any family history, whether or not it contains genealogical information. Mildred Kirkwood suggested heirloom quilts as subject for a Society meeting. Recently she mentioned of discovering some old family quilts. Mildred wrote: "Both my sister and my cousin are trying to figure out how to preserve the quilts so they don't get any worse. Needless to say, these quilts are priceless to us. We just can't figure out why they weren't valued more by my aunt and my mother." Jon Bryan L-AGS President for 2000-2001 - - - - - Visitors are welcome. Off Dublin Blvd., past National Food Lab. URL for a map to the meeting place: < http://www.L-AGS.org/clarkave.html > The Master Genealogist software uses "tags" to enter a collection of data about a subject's name, life events and relationships into your database. The tags are classified into the following groups: name, relationship, birth, death, burial, marriage, divorce, history, address, and other events. Within these groups, you can designate primary data tags for each tag type. For example, you can have a primary name tag and as many name variations tags as you wish to enter into the dataset. TMG has over 100 predefined tags, and gives you the ability to create an unlimited number of custom tags. We will discuss the different types of Tag Types and Tag Lists, when they should be utilized, and how they can help sort your database and generate reports. This will cover Lesson 3 - Working With Tags in the TMG Getting Started Manual, and page 306-317 in the TMG Reference Manual. Consideration of how these Tag types can help in report generation will be discussed. We continue to thank Larry Renslow for his continued support. His guidance has been a great help to all of us attending these meetings. A free demo of the TMG software can be obtained from : http://www.whollygenes.com. See you Thursday, November 8th, 7:30.
