===================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR OCTOBER October 1, 2001 ===================================================================== Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker group will meet this week. Note that the program will include a discussion of virus vulnerability. See details below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A N N O U N C E M E N T S Our president, Jon Bryan, has been invited to speak at the Livermore Library's monthly lecture series on local history. He has titled his talk, "Rooted in Livermore, or Are Your Relatives Buried on Boot Hill?" The meeting will be at the Livermore Library at 7:30 pm on Friday, October 12, 2001. Admission is free. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please visit the L-AGS "Family History Month" displays at the Livermore, Dublin and Pleasanton Libraries and give your feedback to Jon Bryan at . We are interested in suggestions for improvement, and in your belated offers of items to display. There is still time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS has 51 members on Excite@Home, the high speed Internet Service Provider (ISP). Headlines in the newspaper this morning announced that Excite is filing for bankruptcy. All subscribers to this service should have received an e-mail this morning from AT&T, the parent company to Excite, saying in effect, "Not to worry, the service will continue without interruption." In fact, AT&T promises some improvements. We shall see. ===================================================================== O C T O B E R M E E T I N G S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Leader Date: Thursday, October 4, 2001 at 7:30 PM Always the first Thursday of the month Place: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html Viruses: In view of the intense interest in viruses evidenced at the CIG meeting last week, we will devote part of the meeting to a discussion of ways to protect your computer. It is not a Family Tree Maker subject, but it is timely and important for all of our computer users. Doug Mumma has agreed to give us the benefit of his experience in the subject. We will also discuss FTM Version 9.0, especially early experiences of those who have received their upgrades. Members owning laptops are requested to bring them to the meeting. As usual, please bring your FTM manual also. If you have questions you want to bring up at the meeting, or topics you would like to have discussed, tell the group about it in advance at: ftm.group@L-AGS.org As always, we will devote some of the meeting to trying to help each other in the use of FTM software. All persons interested or potentially interested in Family Tree Maker and related software are invited to attend. Guests are welcome at no charge. For information on our group please feel free to call Richard Finn at 925.XXX.XXX or e-mail him at rwfinn@pacbell.net. If you can't get Dick try George Anderson at 925-XXX-XXX or XXXX@home.com ------------------------------------------------------------------------- REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING John Bryan, Acting Program Chairman Tuesday, October 9, 2001 - 7:30 PM Always the second Tuesday of the month Location: Congregation Beth Emek, 1886 College Avenue, Livermore Map to the meeting site: http://www.L-AGS.org/college.html Speaker: Barry Schrader Local journalist, author and historian Topic: "Will the Last Person Leaving Livermore Please Dig Up the Time Capsule? (and other Livermore lore)." If you missed Barry Schrader's presentation at the Livermore Library on September 21st, you will have a second chance on Tuesday, October 9th at 7:30 PM at Beth Emek. Gail and I thoroughly enjoyed Barry Schrader's presentation. Why? It could almost be called a human equivalent of what the Bunshah newspaper CD-ROM Volume III newspaper index may be. It did this by answering many questions we have had as we were reading local newspapers since 1969 (or about the last third of the 20th Century). It is something that the Bryans would profit by hearing again about every two years. Barry's candid personal comments about various ideas for local art statues were refreshing. In a sense Barry worked on the other side of the fence as an employee and editor with local newspapers including the Tri-Valley Herald and Valley Times. This provides a unique perspective on this period of time in our valley. His list of historical "Wins" included restorations of the Historic Ravenswood Mansion and the Southern Pacific Railroad Depot. His list of "Losses" included the Fallon house, May school and Jack London's boyhood home. Local historians who passed away were also included in the losses. These included Janet and Ralph Newton, Virginia Bennett, Dagmar Fulton and Herbert Hagemann. Barry kindly supplied this description of his background and his talk: "Barry Schrader is a lifelong history buff, has lived here 30 years and belongs to five historical societies. He has published two books: "Will the Last Person Leaving Livermore Please Unscrew the Bulb in Fire Station One" and "Schraders of DeKalb County Illinois", a genealogy on his own family. He enjoys doing oral history tapes for the Livermore Heritage Guild and his other hobbies are antique letterpress printing and historic newspapers. His talk Oct. 9 is his perception of Livermore's historical highlights since its founding." Jon Bryan L-AGS President for 2000-2001 - - - - - Visitors are welcome.
