====================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR SEPTEMBER September 1, 2001 ====================================================================== Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker group will meet next week. See details below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A N N O U N C E M E N T S Sixty-four new books in 58 titles are now on the shelf in the genealogy collection at the Pleasanton Library. The list is too long to include in this bulletin, but can be viewed via our home page at: http://www.L-AGS.org Click on the sequence of links: Genealogy at the Pleasanton Library, New Genealogy Books at the Pleasanton Library. The list is not quite up to date yet since some books are still in process. Our printed catalog will be updated when the new books are all available to patrons. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Longtime L-AGS member Enoch Haga has announced the release of his most recent book, "How to Prepare Your Genealogy for Publication on Your Home Computer". He has donated a copy to the L-AGS Library. The book is softbound and contains 100 pages printed on 60 pound paper. It can be ordered from: Enoch Haga PUBLISHER 983 Venus Way Livermore CA 94550-6345 The price to members of L-AGS is $20 including tax and shipping. For non- members the price is $24. This is Enoch's eighth book. Three previous books are on genealogy, including "The 2000-Year History of the Haga-Helgoy Families: Ancestors & Descendants", a copy of which he donated to the L-AGS Library. The other books are on computers and mathematics, his profession before retirement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- October is Family History Month. L-AGS has made month-long reservations for exhibit showcases in all three local libraries: Livermore, Dublin and Pleasanton. We need genealogy-related items for display in the cases - items that will attract attention and stir viewers to action in beginning their family history research. We hope they will then realize that joining us in L-AGS will aid their research. The cases will be locked, so original articles will be safe. Examples of desirable exhibits are old portraits; heirlooms with a story to tell (captions will be provided); books you have published; old, family- related newspaper articles with large headlines; and old documents containing some large print. The newspaper articles and documents can be copies. Anything in small print that must be read to be understood would not be suitable. We will also display some L-AGS publications and some CDs. Please help us in this outreach. Contact Jon Bryan at 925 XXX-XXXX or mailto:XXXX@aol.com to offer your exhibits. Your ideas about what would make library patrons stop and get interested would be appreciated. ====================================================================== S E P T E M B E R M E E T I N G S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Leader Date: Thursday, September 6, 2001 at 7:30 PM Always the first Thursday of the month Place: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html Note: We have been assigned Room 3 at Sonoma School this year - not Room 7/8 where we have been in the past. Instead, Beth Emek offered a prayer vigil, open to the public.] ******************************* Speaker: Fran Schweitzer Member of the San Ramon Valley Genealogical Society Topic: Quilting and Genealogy Can Go Hand in Hand Fran Schweitzer is a member of the San Ramon Valley Genealogical Society (SRVGS). She has been doing genealogical research as long as she has been quilting. Her long love for fabric and an involvement in sewing switched to quilting in the early 1980's when quilting was revived. It became an intense pastime. She will give us a brief review of fabric, followed by her family connection to her ancestors through quilts. Fran would like to invite members who have an old quilt (especially a documented one) to bring and share with the group. I heard Fran give this special presentation about two of her favorite hobbies to SRVGS in February 2001 at the LDS Family History Center at Stone Valley Road in Alamo. If your ancestors are similar to mine, you may have had one or more quilters somewhere along the way. My Mother did not think she had the patience to enjoy quilting even though she liked to sew. But according to one cousin our grandmother did quilt, probably with a group of church ladies. One of grandmother's quilts got passed down but may have been almost worn out. Quilts can represent not only fine crafts but also a "primitive" art in the sense made famous by "Grandma Moses." A photo of a family quilt would be a wonderful addition to any family history, whether or not it contained genealogical information. Our "Thank you" goes to L-AGS member Mildred Kirkwood for requesting this topic. Recently she wrote of discovering some family quilts in a barrel in storage building. In her e-note Mildred wrote: "Both my sister and my cousin are trying to figure out how to preserve the quilts so they don't get any worse. Needless to say, these quilts are priceless to us. We just can't figure out why they weren't valued more by my aunt and my mother." Jon Bryan L-AGS President for 2000-2001 - - - - - Visitors are welcome. However, if you are a serious researcher and want unlimited fields in which to enter information - such as resources, citations, relationships, and your research log - then you should explore the use of TMG. Do you wanted to personalize the presentation of your information with unique sentence structure? Highlight those family members with health history? Do you have limitations on the number of witnesses to an event? This is not an issue with TMG. Find out why the Master Genealogist (TMG) software is used by so many professional genealogists. Users with many years of experience have offered their assistance to those attending the meetings. With the use of a laptop and a digital projector, we are able to demonstrate new techniques and answer your questions. This month we will be entering citations from unusual documents. Be sure to bring copies of any documents you would like to use as examples. We meet every second Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m., LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore. If you have general questions during the month, be sure to address them to tvtmg@l-ags.org. A free demo of the TMG software can be obtained from www.whollygenes.com. See you Thursday, September 13th. 7:30 LDS Church on Mocho Street in Livermore. There are many public records available on the Internet. Are you looking to connect with a still living "cousin" or wondering what happened to the "black sheep" in your family? We will explore links to public records or databases such as: Lists involving firefighters, death row, autopsy, coroner's log, Air Force most wanted, fictitious business names, delinquent parents, lobbyists, school records, suspects & bulletins, grant deeds, FBI, etc. Also, we will have a short discussion on setting filters to help restrict your computers from receiving spam (junk mail) via e-mail. The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We welcome all, from those who are just beginning to explore their family's roots to more experienced researchers. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore, 7:30 p.m. We hope you will mark us on your calendar for this and future meetings. - - - - - The E-Mail Forum for our group is: mailto:study.group@L-AGS.org Group participants are invited to use the forum for questions and answers about the study topics, past and present.
