====================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR JUNE June 1, 2001 ====================================================================== Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker group will meet next week. See details below. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- A N N O U N C E M E N T S 1880 Census CDs Now Available As detailed in the e-mail announcement sent to all Members and Guests by Jim Scofield today, the long-awaited CD transcription of the 1880 US Census was officially released today by the LDS Church. As an update to Jim's information, the CDs are available at the LDS Family History Center in Pleasanton, as well as at the FHC on Mocho Street in Livermore. Open hours for both FHCs, and maps showing their location, can be found at: http://www.l-ags.org/library.hours.html L-AGS has placed an order for the 56-CD set, but it will undoubtedly remain back-ordered for some time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The 1880 Census in Our Valley - a Printed Version Since the LDS Church has transcribed the handwritten records of the 1880 census and published them in digital form on CDs, it becomes possible to print out selected parts for handy reference. That has been done for the inhabitants of Murray Township, which includes all of southeastern Alameda county. There were 4604 residents in the township in 1880, including a large and diverse population of immigrants. The 113-page book listing and indexing these residents is available for research in our library, but will not be sold. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Membership Report Kaye Strickland, Membership Chair Data as of May 29, 2001 Classification Memberships Individuals Individual 126 126 Family 42 84 Life Membership 7 9 Benefactor 3 4 Honorary/Charter 5 5 Honorary 2 2 ____ ____ Total 185 230 Memberships with E-Mail: 161 New Members in May: Ann Oliver, Jacqueline Partain, Carl Webb, Allan Siason ====================================================================== J U N E M E E T I N G S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Leader Date: Thursday, June 7, 2001 at 7:30 PM Always the first Thursday of the month Place: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html Among other topics, we will discuss "Printing your book with FTM", and "Creating a free home page with FTM." She will speak about the "US GenWeb Project and the GenWeb Site for Marin County." Both Jana and her husband Carl are very active members in their Marin County Genealogical Society (MCGS). Carl is President and Jana is Program Chairperson and Webmaster for MCGS. We look forward to meeting both of them. Since Jana has been involved with website design for about a decade, this helps explain why MCGS has such an excellent website at < http://www.rootsweb.com/~camarin/ >. Her design company is called WebsWeWeave, which you may check out at < http://www.websweweave.net/ >. The MCGS site has links to information related to births, marriages, obituaries, wills, deeds, pensions and bibles from Marin County plus queries and biographies. Jana began her genealogical research about 35 years ago after meeting husband-to-be, Carl, who asked her to interview her "Grama" in Crockett, CA. Out of this interview she discovered that their name should be Dewhurst rather than McPherson. The strange circumstances of this name change we will ask Jana to relate when she speaks. Jana says, "Perhaps my proudest effort however is the personal website I use as the basis of my own research which includes collaborative pages for the DEWHURST, KIRWIN and MATLOCK surnames: < http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~jmbhome/index.html > (see Climbing the Branches - Carl is down The Black Hole)." Our "Thank You" goes to L-AGS member David Abrahams for recommending Jana as a speaker after hearing her presentation. Jon Bryan - - - - - Visitors are welcome. Because of its varied capability of recording data and evidence, organizing research and creating narrative reports and custom wall charts, there is a learning curve involved. It is for this reason our beginning users group was formed, to help each other learn TMG. Users with several years of experience have offered their assistance to those attending the meetings. With the use of a laptop and a digital projector, we are able to demonstrate techniques and answer questions. We want to thank Larry Renslow for his contributions toward our education. We meet every second Thursday of the month at 7:30 p.m., LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore. The June meeting will be our third gathering, so what better time to join with us and learn this new genealogy software? We will be discussing the export of data into TMG using Genbridge. There will also be time for open questions. If you have general questions during the month, be sure to address them to tvtmg@l-ags.org. A free demo of the TMG software can be obtained from . Non-members of L-AGS are welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENEALOGY STUDY GROUP Kay Speaks, Leader Thursday, June 21, 2001 - 7:30 PM Always the third Thursday of the month Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore URL for a map to the church: < http://www.L-AGS.org/mocho.html > Posting An Effective Query Are your queries generating the responses you expect? Are you targeting your queries to the right audience? Learn how to create effective queries at our June meeting. Do you have a query that has generated successful results that you would like to share with the group? Please bring examples of what you consider to be good and bad queries. The L-AGS Study Group is an informal meeting of family historians and researchers. We represent those who have spent many decades learning methods and techniques...to those of us who are just beginning our journey through the archives and old documents. We are learning about the joys, and yes, frustrations of this wonderful lifelong hobby. One of the many things we have in common is the willingness to share and help others. We meet on the third Thursday of every month at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho, Livermore, 7:30 p.m. I do hope you will mark us on your calendar for future meetings. So far this year we have discussed: Naming Patterns (January), On-line Census (February), Deciphering Old Handwriting (March), and Researching Female Ancestors (April). The E-Mail Forum for our group is: mailto:study.group@L-AGS.org Group participants are invited to use the forum for questions and answers about the study topics, past and present. Visitors are welcome. - - - - - Members needing help with a genealogy problem may call one of the club officers, who will attempt to find someone who can help. For information contact Kay Speaks at . ------------------------------------------------------------------------- COMPUTER INTEREST GROUP Dick Finn, Group Leader Thursday, June 28, 2001 - 7:30 PM Always the fourth Thursday of the month Place: Livermore Adult Education Facility (formerly the Sonoma Avenue School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, surf to: http://www.L-AGS.org/sonoma.html We will continue the discussion about creating personal Web pages. If you have succeeded in building your Web page, we would like to hear about it. If you are still having problems, we will try to help, in the meeting or in one-on-one sessions. Please avail yourself of the CIG e-mail forum to post questions or answers: < mailto:cig@L-AGS.org >. As always, our meetings are open to other "computers in genealogy" subjects for discussion. ====================================================================== The Boilerplate We realize that not all L-AGS members have e-mail. The problems with Welsh names are only too well known to those doing Welsh genealogy. "Everyone seemed to be called Jones, Williams, Davies or Evans. To prevent confusion, the Welsh use nicknames, and nowhere is their teasing wit and love of language more apparent. Most nicknames derive from a person's occupation, like the builder I heard of called Will Five Bricks or the baker Dai Bread in Dylan Thomas's 'Under Milk Wood.' My favorites were the two Evanses from a village in Carmarthenshire. One was an undertaker, the other a travel agent. The travel agent was known as Evans There and Back, the undertaker as Evans One Way." ======================================================================
