REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING
John Bryan, Acting Program Chairman

Genetic Genealogy
Using DNA to Research your Ancestors
Presenter:
Douglas Mumma
L-AGS member
Doug will describe several DNA testing techniques that are now being
offered commercially to research a person's paternal and maternal
ancestors. This new field, sometimes called "genetic genealogy", can be
used to support or enhance traditional "documentary genealogy" when it
fails because various civil, church or family records have been destroyed
or otherwise don't exist.
Doug will present the Y-chromosome results that he obtained from his own
recent "MUMMA Surname DNA Project". This study included 30 male
participants who potentially shared his Mumma surname and live in
America, Canada, Germany and Estonia. From these results, he was able to
determine a standard MUMMA DNA "fingerprint" and show which participants
share a common ancestral connection with him. In particular, he was able
to determine that he and several of his German friends with the Momma
surname are his cousins. Results of this research are online at:
http://www.mumma.org/DNA.htm
Doug was quoted in the cover story in a recent issue (29 January 2001) of
U. S. News and World Report magazine (pages 34 - 41). This article by
Nancy Shute is titled "Tracing Your Genetic Roots - DNA mapping is
unraveling the mystery of human origins." The article may be viewed on
the Internet at:

GENEALOGY STUDY GROUP
Kay Speaks, Leader
Thursday, February 15, 2001 - 7:30 PM
Always the Third Thursday of the Month
Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore

Discussion Topic:
Census Images Online
The Study Group will meet at the Livermore LDS Church on Mocho Street in
the room next to the Family History Center. (Note: Same Building,
Different Room!) We will connect via the Internet to
to view their online copies of original census
records.
Because of the availability of printed census schedules, researchers who
rely on printed transcripts may miss important information and clues
found only in the original version of the census records. Digital copies
of these census forms are now available online.
Many handouts and forms will be available. If you have specific
questions, please e-mail them in advance to the Study Group leader, Kay
Speaks at .
Beginning and advanced researchers are encouraged to participate and
share their experiences and research techniques. Sharing is also
encouraged on our e-mail forum at:

ROOTS HOOTS
More Genealogy Quips from Gary Bradley
Genealogy: Tracing yourself back to better people.
A pack rat is hard to live with but makes a fine ancestor.
I want to find ALL of them! So far I only have a few thousand.
I should have asked them BEFORE they died!
I think my ancestors had several "bad heir" days.
Only a genealogist regards a step backwards as progress.
It's an unusual family that hath neither a lady of the evening or a
thief.
