===================================================================== LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR SEPTEMBER 2000 September 1, 2000 ===================================================================== A N N O U N C E M E N T S ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Meeting Reminder The Family Tree Maker Focus Group will meet on Thursday next week at the Mocho Street LDS Church. Note the change in location for the summer! See below for more details. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- New Book Catalog Our Publications Chair, Donna Fleckner, has copies of the new L-AGS book catalog published in June 2000. There are two versions. The short version (31 pages) lists the call number, title, author and number of books in the set. The full version (102 pages) lists all of the data from the short version, plus other bibliographic detail, such as physical description, alternate author, alternate title, subjects included, etc. Both catalogs cover the same 821 sets of books comprising 970 volumes, and both have a subject index and author index. Suggested donations are $3.50 (L-AGS members) and $5.00 (non-members) for the short version and $8.50 (members) and $12.50 (non-members) for the full version. Packaging and mailing, if needed, is $1.50 for the short version and $2.00 for the full version. To order a catalog, contact Donna by e-mail at: XXXX@compuserve.com or by telephone at 925 XXX-XXXX. Make arrangements with Donna for mailing the catalog or for picking it up at a meeting or elsewhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Five New CDs Five new CDs in the "Pedigree Resource File" series from LDS were added to the collection at the Pleasanton Library this week, bringing the total so far to 11. These disks, containing searchable genealogies contributed by the public, are similar to those in the World Family Tree series from Genealogy.com, the Ancestral File series also from LDS, and to the online files in WorldConnect at RootsWeb and Ancestry World Tree at Ancestry.com. An up-to-date catalog of our CDs can be found at: http://www.l-ags.org/pleasanton.cds.html About 80% of our CDs were published by Genealogy.com, formerly Broderbund. These are the disks with call number prefixes CD and WF. All of the surnames on these 293 CDs are indexed on the three Family Finder Index CDs FF 1-3. Users of the CD collection should remember that there are 66 other disks that are NOT indexed in the Family Finder Index. All of them are indexed separately. They should not be overlooked when doing searches in the CD library. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Humor These bulletins get rather dull. Starting with this issue, I will add a bit of humor at the end. I invite everyone to submit items for this new feature. The groundrules are that the subject must be genealogy, the item must be rated "G", the length must not exceed 1 KB, and the source must be acknowledged. Original stories, true or otherwise, from members are encouraged. ===================================================================== C O M I N G E V E N T S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Group Leader Thursday, September 7, 2000 - 7:30 PM Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore URL for a map to the church: http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html NOTE THE CHANGE IN LOCATION FOR THE SUMMER We will devote the meeting to problem solving, sharing of tips and discoveries, and planning for future meetings. Many members of his family came to America in the early part of the 20th century. In order to learn more about them, he has worked diligently to retrieve their immigration and naturalization documents. In doing so, he has learned how to do the research, where the records are located, and the best ways to retrieve them. David will discuss and show various types of immigration and naturalization documents that are available to researchers. He will present information as to where these documents may be located, and discuss methods for obtaining them. David is past president of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society, a member of the San Francisco Bay Area Jewish Genealogical Society and the Jewish Genealogical Society of Great Britain, and a Co-Regional Director for the California State Genealogical Alliance. We were in the car headed for a Boy Scout banquet. My grandson was decked out in full Indian dress that he had proudly made himself. His little sister was in awe. With total admiration she said "Oh Kristopher, I want to be an Indian just like you." There was a moment of silence. Then with exasperation in his voice that only a big brother can express he replied, "Corrina, you're Polish." Lorraine Busch -------------------------------------------------------------------------
