Our group will meet at 7:30 PM at Congregation Beth Emek at the corner of M Street and College Avenue in Livermore, CA. The Sister City idea was spawned during the Eisenhower administration in the 1950s. It had its roots in Eisenhower's People to People Program. President Eisenhower maintained that people don't go to war, countries do. He therefore urged that people of the USA should establish ongoing contact with people from other countries in order to develop a better understanding and foster better relationships with those people and those countries. According to L-AGS member Ann Homan, Livermore's first Sister City connection was with Quetzaltenango, Guatemala. The Sister City Program with Japan began when Mayor Saito of Yotsukaido, Japan and Mayor Helen Tirsell of Livermore signed a proclamation in April 1977. The newest Livermore Sister City is Snezhinsk, Russia. Cathie (Cryer) Brown is not quite a California native, but she is closer than many of us with about 85% of her life having been spent in California. She was born in Seattle, Washington in 1944. Her Dad moved the family to California in 1951. They lived on the Peninsula (East Palo Alto and Los Altos) until 1958 when they moved to Alamo. Cathie attended San Ramon High School and went to UC Berkeley for undergraduate studies. Cathie returned to school in 1980 at California State University at Hayward (CSUH) to complete a Masters degree in Public Administration (MPA). Cathie has one brother Stephen who lives with his family in Nevada. Tom and Cathie Brown moved to Livermore in 1973 to raise a family. Their children Amy and Jim both graduated from Livermore High School. It sounds as if daughter Amy was influenced by her Mother. Amy went to UC Santa Cruz to study Political Science and continued on to CSUH for her MPA. Currently Amy is working in the public sector in Sacramento. Jim attended UC Davis to study Art and Math and play rugby, becoming an All- American in 1997. His is now an animator (Starship Troopers "Roughnecks") in Southern California. Cathie's maiden name "Cryer" shows up as number 14,661 in terms of surname frequency. When she got married to Tom she added the surname Brown which is number 5 in frequency. From a link from our L-AGS website, it appears that persons with the surname Cryer tended to migrate from New York in 1850, to Ohio in 1880 and to Texas in 1920. By 1990 the name occurred most frequently in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana and Nevada. Our special "Thank you" goes to member Hal Norris for suggesting that we invite Mayor Cathie Brown to give us this presentation. Jon Bryan - - - - - Visitors are welcome at all L-AGS meetings. PAF was introduced in 1984, the pioneer among genealogy programs. Because it was produced by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and tailored to the needs of its members, it quickly gained a huge following, which it still holds today. The program has evolved over the years to take advantage of new technology as it appeared. We will hear about the latest version of PAF from David Cummings. - - - - - Non-members are welcome to attend at no cost.
