======================================================================= LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR MAY 1999 May 1, 1999 ======================================================================= See the note at the end for tips on improving the readability of this message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- This bulletin was ready to be sent out yesterday, May 1, in keeping with the regular monthly schedule. My Internet Service Provider, CCNet, chose that day to install new equipment. They predicted a "short downtime," which turned out to be 24 hours, hence the missed schedule for this bulletin. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- The CD-ROM computer at the Pleasanton Library is finally fixed! Or is it? When I went to the library today, I found an "Out of Order" sign on it. This time, it seems that the computer freezes occasionally for some reason that we haven't yet figured out. Until we find the cause of this new problem, the computer is usable if you are willing to put up with an occasional need to do a "Reset." The "Out of Order" sign has been removed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- C O M I N G E V E N T S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS FAMILY TREE MAKER FOCUS GROUP Dick Finn, Group Leader Date: Thursday, May 6, 1999 at 7:30 PM Place: Livermore Adult Education (old Sonoma School), 543 Sonoma Ave., Livermore For a map to the school, dial up: http://www.l-ags.org/sonoma.html We will have a sharing and problem solving session. He himself has Portuguese, German, Slovak, Chilean and Hungarian ancestsry. He realizes that many of our L-AGS members lack Portuguese ancestry, so Doug plans to emphasize techniques from his research that will also work in researching other nationalities. Like the Sacramento area, our Livermore-Amador Valley has an excellent Portuguese representation. In 1992 Doug began the Hungarian/American Friendship Society and began working on the first newsletter, "Regi Magyarorszag; Old Hungary." In 1996, Doug created his website (www.dholmes.com) that contains information on Portugal and the Azores Islands, Hungarian Genealogy, Slovak Genealogy and Genealogy Gift Ideas. Doug also writes genealogical articles for newsletters and newspapers. Doug's website is linked through our L-AGS website (www.L-AGS.org) using "Useful Internet Links" with "Foreign/Ethnic Sources." and "Hungarian, Slovak and Portuguese Genealogy." Why didn't Doug start a group on Portuguese history and genealogy? Others did it first! His father, Lionel Rocha Holmes is Past-President of the Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society, is now a director, and editor of its quarterly newsletter, "O Progresso." Lionel is also the author of the book, "Portuguese Pioneers of the Sacramento Area", 384pp. He has promised to donate a copy of the book to the L-AGS library. - - - - - For information, contact Jon Bryan at 925 XXX-XXXX or XXXX@aol.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENEALOGY STUDY GROUP Vicki Renz, Leader Thursday, May 20, 1999 - 7:30 pm Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore URL for a map to the church: http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html The study group on May 20 will have a "Brick Wall" session.
