======================================================================= LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY E-BULLETIN FOR APRIL 1999 April 1, 1999 ======================================================================= See the note at the end for tips on improving the readability of this message. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS received a very nice writeup in "The Independent" of Livermore for March 31, 1999. The article appeared in the "Harvest Festival" supplement for that date. The Independent Web site is at "www.independentnews.com", but as of April 1, the March 31 edition had not yet been posted. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS member Carolyn Boatright requests a ride from Livermore to the CGS Fair in Pleasanton on April 9th and 10th. She has had surgery that temporarily keeps her from driving. If you can offer her a ride, please call her at XXX-XXXX. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- If you missed the e-mail announcement sent out yesterday, you should know that the CD-ROM computer at the Pleasanton Library had to be sent in for repairs, to be gone for as long as two weeks. Jay Gilson has since arranged to take the CDs home so that members (only) can have use of them in their own homes until the computer is fixed. Here is the procedure he has established: Call us at XXX-XXXX anytime, 8:30 am to 8:30 pm to arrange a pick-up time at our home at 346 Lincoln Ave., Livermore. If you don't remember what CDs are available, go to the L-AGS home page at: http://www.l-ags.org and click on the link "CDs at the Pleasanton Library". Most of the CDs were published by Broderbund. A detailed description of the contents of the Broderbund CDs can be found at: http://www.familytreemaker.com/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------- C O M I N G E V E N T S Visitors are welcome at all of our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- REGULAR MONTHLY MEETING Jon Bryan, Program Chairman Tuesday, April 13, 1999 - 7:30 pm Location: Congregation Beth Emek, 1886 College Avenue, Livermore Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/college.html Program: "Techniques to locate persons both living and dead." Presenter: D. M. "Max" Noel of San Ramon Retired FBI Agent Max was one of the five FBI agents and six federal prosecutors who were given the Distinguished Service Award by Attorney General Janet Reno for their work on the Ted Kaczynski Unabomber case. I met Max through a mutual friend. I found he was getting interested in genealogy, so I asked him if he would discuss missing persons cases with L-AGS. He readily agreed. The best way to understand his background is to quote excerpts from a recent article in the San Francisco Chronicle: - - - - - Top FBI Agent Had the Dirt On Kaczynski Sam McManis / CHRONICLE STAFF WRITER Friday, February 5, 1999 Years of Max Noel's life had been dedicated to the Unabomber investigation. He had postponed retirement for the case, spent months away from his family in San Ramon and put off too many vacations to count. So, after finally putting the cuffs on Ted Kaczynski in his cabin in Lincoln, Mont., on April 3, 1996, what did the veteran FBI agent and the terrorist who later pleaded guilty to 16 mail bombings that killed three people and injured 29 over 18 years talk about? Gardening. "He had some interesting things to say about raising carrots and parsnips," Noel said. ... Noel said he and Kaczynski had a lot of time of their hands that afternoon in Montana. They sat across from each other at a dining room table in a neighboring cabin while 50 FBI investigators combed Kaczynski's now-infamous shack for evidence. ... "Unlike what most people think of FBI agents and interrogations and bright lights stuff, I told him, 'I'm not going to try to interrogate you, but I'd be happy to pass the time of day with you. It's going to be a long day ... We talked about gardening, history, hunting, survival in the mountains. ... Noel was taken aback by the sight of Kaczynski. All the behavioral profiles, all the background into suspect's past the FBI had compiled, did not prepare Noel for the sight of Kaczynski in the cabin. "I was shocked," Noel said. "It was not the image of the man we thought he'd be. ... I thought, 'My god, that's a wild-looking guy.' The man stepped out of the cabin and his clothes were literally falling off of him. He never changed them. He was covered with layers of gray grease, grime and soot." ... What Noel learned, he said, was that Kaczynski was not considered abnormal by Lincoln residents. In fact, the local librarian allowed Kaczynski to interact with her children. ... In retirement, Noel says he will hit the golf courses in the East Bay and perhaps work in the private sector. But he isn't making plans beyond his next vacation with his wife, Kit. "We don't know where we're going yet," he said. A fellow agent in his office piped up, "I hear Montana is nice this time of year." - - - - - For information, contact Jon Bryan at 925 XXX-XXXX or XXXX@aol.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- GENEALOGY STUDY GROUP Vicki Renz, Leader Thursday, April 15, 1999 - 7:30 pm Location: Mocho Street LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore URL for a map to the church: http://www.l-ags.org/mocho.html We will discuss Bay Area libraries.
