Presenter: Bill Farrand, L-AGS Member The L-AGS Computer Interest Group combined with the Family Tree Maker Focus Group will meet at 7:30 P.M., Thursday, August 27, 1998, at the LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore. The speaker will be L-AGS member Bill Farrand on "The use of digital cameras for genealogical work." This is sure to be an informative and interesting topic. Non-members are welcome at no cost. Bill describes his presentation as follows. "This is for general audiences. The technical level is that of a consumer of computer accessories. Availability, cost, and ease of use are emphasized. The perceived needs for digital cameras by genealogists include all of those of the amateur photographer with additional emphasis on manuscript copying. Thusly portability (weight, size & shape), image assurance, computer compatibility and librarian acceptability become of extreme importance. "A compact manuscript-reproducing attachment (copy stand) was developed for my use. It will also be described." Dick Finn leads this group with the assistance of George Anderson. For information on the August meeting, call Dick at 925 XXX-XXXX or e-mail him at XXXX@pacbell.net. We are starting an experimental program to share the costs of buying new CDs for the Genealogy Compact Disk Center at the Pleasanton Library. Here's how it will work in general, with specific details to be decided later: You and the Library Committee jointly decide on a genealogy CD that would be useful to you as well as to the library. Then L-AGS orders the CD. You pay some agreed-upon part of the cost and you get to use it at home for some agreed-upon length of time, before turning it over to the CD Center permanently. It's a win-win offer! If you are interested, contact me at 925 XXX-XXXX or at XXXX@best.com. Currently available CDs were listed in the April 1998 Roots Tracer. They are also listed on the L-AGS Web site, with a link on the home page. The Pleasanton Library hours are: Monday and Tuesday Noon to 9 pm Wednesday and Thursday 10 am to 9 pm Friday closed Saturday 10 am to 5 pm Sunday 1 pm to 5 pm A L-AGS docent is on duty at the library on Wednesdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Members who would like to serve as genealogy docents may contact Jay Gilson at 925 XXX-XXXX or at XXXX@best.com. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- F R E S H T I P S F O R A U G U S T Tips of the Month Shirley Siems Terry, Tipster shirley@tdl.com This month, Shirley has practically a textbook on useful things to do with the Tables function in your word processor. Shirley would like to hear about your favorite tips! To reach "Tips of the Month" on our Web site, click on that title in the table on our home page at http://www.l-ags.org. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Notes from the Webmaster Members who have surnames posted on the surname pages of our Web site will occasionally, even often, get e-mail queries about the postings. They will be addressed to a coded address (mine is XXXX@l-ags.org) and are relayed to you by the L-AGS mail server operated by Larry Renslow. If you get unwanted mail - advertising, spam, etc. - to your coded address, please let me know. We would like to put a stop to it immediately. - - - - - Please make good use of our L-AGS e-mail system, which allows you to send a broadcast message to all L-AGS members by using the address: XXXX@l-ags.org but please use it only for genealogy messages or queries of general interest to the whole club. - - - - - The seven most recent past issues of the Roots Tracer are now permanently available on our Web site, thanks to Doug Mumma and Vicki Renz. Look for the link "Tracer Archives" on our home page.
