May 1, 1997 ------------------------------------------------------------- LIVERMORE-AMADOR GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY MONTHLY E-BULLETIN ------------------------------------------------------------- The following is a list of coming events for L-AGS. Visitors and guests are always welcome to attend our meetings. ------------------------------------------------------------- Regular Monthly Meeting Tuesday, May 13, 1997 at 7:30 pm Program: Marge Jergentz-Stout speaking on "Going to my Homeland, Germany and the Ukraine." Location: Congregation Beth Emek, 1886 College Avenue, Livermore Marge is a long-time member of L-AGS and an author, lecturer and facilitator of "How to Write Your Family History." Marge will recount an emotion-packed visit to her ancestral homes in Germany and the Ukraine. The two-week trip was arranged by North Dakota State University, a center of research on Germans from Russia. She told the Herald after her return that when she arrived in Friedenstal near Odessa "she sobbed, overcome by a tremendously deep sorrow." All of the ethnic Germans who had settled Friedenstal centuries before had been exiled by Stalin during World War II, either to the front or to Siberia. Fortunately, her ancestors had emigrated long before that. She also told the reporter, "Standing in the place that they had stood so long ago is just an indescribable experience. It brings a person full-circle. It's a completion. It's like coming home." For information call David Abrahams at XXX-XXXX or Dave Curry at XXX-XXXX. Non-Members are welcome. ------------------------------------------------------------- Genealogy Study Group Thursday, May 15, 1997 at 7:30 pm Program: "Problem Solving in Genealogy" Location: LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street, Livermore The study group will meet on Thursday, May 15, at 7:30 P.M. in the LDS Church, 950 Mocho Street in Livermore. Computer Focus Groups * Family Tree Maker for Windows ** J'Nell Thompson is the coordinator for this group (telephone # is XXX-XXXX and e-mail is XXX-XXXX). The group decided to meet monthly, on the first Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. If there is sufficient interest, via telephone calls or e-mail messages, an additional daytime or Saturday meeting will also be considered. Bring you problems and questions to the meetings and the group will try to answer them. A computer loaded with Family Tree Maker ver 3.40 will be available for use. ** Family Origins for Windows ** Wayne Barnes is the coordinator for this group (telephone # is XXX-XXXX and e-mail is XXXX@aol.com). While a number of people use this program as their primary program, many of the Family Tree Maker users also wanted to attend this focus group as well. This group decided to meet monthly on the second Thursday of each month at 7:30 p.m. The first meeting will be on May 8th. Wayne offered to hold the meetings at his house in Dublin as he feels he can accommodate about 10 people at a session. Because it is unknown how many people may wish to attend, it was decided that people will need to call or e-mail Wayne and reserve space in the group. If there is an overflow due to a large response, an afternoon meeting will probably be held. Please be sure to let Wayne know if you are coming and obtain specific directions to his house. ------------------------------------------------------------- Visit the L-AGS Web site at: http://www.california.com/~lags/lags.html We have had 2636 visitors to our pages since December 6 last year, and 399 visitors in the last month. ------------------------------------------------------------- L-AGS Library The L-AGS library is housed in the Pleasanton Library at 400 Old Bernal Avenue in Pleasanton.
