Copies of early newspapers in Pleasanton, Alameda County, California, are very rare. None has been registered with the California Newspaper Project, an 18-year effort that so far has inventoried 9,000 California newspapers in 14,000 repositories, and has created over 100,000 rolls of microfilm of the papers. Not one Pleasanton newspaper is included.

Two small collections of early Pleasanton newspapers are known to exist in Pleasanton. One is a full run of the weekly Pleasanton Times from January 1929 to July 1934, held at the Pleasanton library. The original papers on newsprint are bound into five oversized volumes. The sheets are yellowed and somewhat fragile. The other collection is held at the Pleasanton Museum on Main. It consists of 87 widely scattered issues from 1885 to 1955. Many of these issues are in perilous condition, so fragile that they cannot even be removed from the storage box to be read.

The Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society is beginning an effort to get these two collections, and possibly others yet undiscovered, onto microfilm and into digital form. Whether or not this effort will include conversion of the newspaper images to searchable text is uncertain. In the meantime, I thought it would be useful to compile a person-name index to the obituaries in the Pleasanton Library newspapers. This index is being published in print and online. If a researcher finds a name of interest in the index, the library will grant restricted access to the bound volumes to allow the full obituary to be read. I hope that the film and DVD versions of the papers will some day allow free access, maybe even online access.

My search of the five years, six months of the Pleasanton Times found 129 obituaries. In addition, there were 18 simple notices for deaths that occurred in 1928, making data available for 147 persons.

I recorded the name of the decedent, the date of death when given or calculated, the date of the newspaper, and miscellaneous other information in the obituary. The data are sorted by the name of the decedent, surname first.
