Using the 2007 and 2009 edition of Evidence Explained, we plan to discuss a citation for the World War I draft registration. This assignment is deceptively simple, because the first edition of Evidence Explained gives an exact citation for these records on page 598 (section 11.33). (For those of you using the second edition of EE, create your template using the example citation for the World War II draft registration cards found on FamilySearch.) Your challenge is to convert this citation into TMGese. What source elements will you need? How will you handle the punctuation? Will you need to create any new source elements? Feel free to add your template creations to our Tri-Valley TMG User Group Blog’s August Challenge post. Putting all this work into concocting a template just to recreate a citation for one record group seems like a waste of time. What other record types you can use that would fit this same template? There might be a prize awarded to the winner. Don't forget that we need some records to cite. The 1900 federal census enumeration for the Robert Moore Baldwin family lists four children: Frank O., Hubert H., Louise Kyle, and Robert M. Baldwin. How many World War I and World War II draft registration cards can you find for the members of this family? Don't forget to search for a son-in-law's registration, also. Here are some specific questions for you. 1. What challenges did you encounter in searching for these records? 2. What conflicting evidence did you uncover? 3. Read the section titled "Summary of Findings" in my preliminary research report on this family. Did you find any evidence in these records that supports the first statement in this section? Visit the Blog’s link if you missed our June meeting and want to catch up on the post-class comments or refurbish your class database. There are also links to other good info from Sue. Kindly R.S.V.P. if you plan to attend the meeting and indicate if you will bring a laptop. Meetings are a cooperative experience where TV-TMG users will have the opportunity to lead one of the classes on a volunteer basis. Let us know if you have a favorite source citation you would like to present. Be sure to check the meeting date and time each month for possible changes due to scheduling conflicts of the instructors. Do not forget to check our blog, the “Tri-Valley TMG User Group” at http://tvtmgug.blogspot.com/. This is a great place to record our citation decisions, post notes and ideas from the meeting, and ask and answer questions. If you have not received an invitation to join the blog readership, please e-mail Sue at tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org. Guests are always welcome at our meetings; however, we may not be able to accommodate the use of your laptop as desktop space is reserved for registered TV-TMG members. TV-TMG users should bring their laptop and power cord if possible. The class is currently using TMG version 7. A copy of the group's practice database is provided on our blog. Please download the newest version prior to each workshop. A laptop is not a requirement, as the lesson is digitally projected. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting or on our blog. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! Resources: A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Mills’ book can be purchased online from the following websites plus many other websites: Amazon, WhollyGenes, Footnote and Ancestry. For additional information contact: tvtmg.chair@l-ags.org. We extend sincere condolences to Shirley and her family. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- RECORD OF DEATHS IN ALAMEDA COUNTY, CALIFORNIA, 1895-1901 BOOK D This is from a Sandy Clark email, forwarded by George Anderson. "I published the first half of Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book D, 1895-1901 for persons with surnames beginning with A through N - in March 2009. This book combines the previous records with my transcription of records for persons with surnames beginning with O through Z. The transcription of Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book D, 1895-1901 is now complete with 6655 entries. [Available at: http://www.l-ags.org/County_Death_Records_II/intro.html] In contrast to most other L-AGS databases, which cover only Murray and Pleasanton Townships of Alameda County, Book D contains county-wide data. Unfortunately, the county death records do not specify the residence or place of death. I am pleased to present in this book my transcription of the Record of Deaths in Alameda County, California, Book D, 1895-1901. Sandy Clark July 19, 2010." ========================================================================== PRESERVE YOUR STORIES IN THE ROOTS TRACER ========================================================================== Our Roots Tracer offers all members the opportunity to preserve the stories of their families in print.
