She left that career to raise a family. During this time she developed a passion for genealogy, which led to more than thirty years of genealogical adventures and explorations. She has traveled throughout the states giving a variety of genealogical lectures and has taught numerous classes and courses on genealogy research. She is local to our area, a member of the Livermore-Amador Genealogical Society, and actively teaches genealogical research procedures and techniques at Los Positas College. Genealogical research can be a very rewarding experience, and a few successes can generate a ravenous appetite for more. Sue's program uses real-life genealogy problems to illustrate the hidden assumptions all researchers make, especially when this passion for results overcomes the necessity for thorough research and accurate analysis. Her program then describes techniques to identify an invalid assumption at work and methods to get your research back on track - and keep it there. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Tri-Valley TMG Users Group The Master Genealogist Software Date: Sunday, October 18, 2009 Time: 1:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m. (note change in normal meeting date and time) Location: 7077 Koll Center Parkway, Suite 110, Pleasanton, CA 94566 Map to the meeting site: http://www.l-ags.org/maps/Pls-KollCenter.html Leader: Kay Speaks, tvtmg.chair@L-AGS.org Instructors: Kay Speaks & Sue Johnston Topic: Chapter 13 - Roles The Roles feature in TMG is a powerful tool for recognizing the various parts individuals played in an event. Roles are a means to specify a person's part in an event and cause screens and reports to reflect that part. In a marriage tag, for example, you might have persons with the Roles of Bride, Groom, Minister, Maid of Honor, Best Man, and many more. Roles provide four separate, but related, functions: o Apply descriptive labeling o Create appropriate text in narrative reports o Allow reference by Role name o Allow you to create a "library" of Sentence Structures Terry Reigel's website has a good Roles tutorial, http://tmg.reigelridge.com/Roles-Tutorial.htm. TV-TMG classes use Terry Reigel’s new A Primer for The Master Genealogist book written for Version 7. Read about the book at http://reigelridge.com/press/primer.htm. With the aid of a digital projector, Kay and Sue work as an instructional team. We discuss, demonstrate, and brainstorm best practices of the software using a hands-on method. We learn TMG's features by actually entering samples of the lesson into a TV-TMG class practice database. Each monthly session is like a three-hour TMG workshop Guests are always welcome at our meetings. Accommodations for laptops are available. If you have a laptop, bring it with you to the meeting. A copy of the group's practice database will be provided to you. A laptop is not a requirement, as the lesson will be digitally projected. If you can't stay for the entire 3 hours, come and leave early. TMG questions not specific to all attendees will be addressed in the later part of our meeting. Please bring samples of your problem if possible. We hope to see you at the next meeting! A free demo version of the software can be downloaded at http://www.whollygenes.com. Terry Reigel's book can be purchased from this website. WebPages you used in the past no longer available? There's still hope! As genealogists we search for lost relatives. Did you know you can search for lost WebPages-those Internet sites that seem to disappear overnight? At our October L-AGS Study Group meeting we will learn how to find lost WebPages. Has someone told you the information you need for your ancestor is posted on a website that no longer exist? Even though WebPages are deleted by the owner a copy of these same WebPages may be archived elsewhere. Come to our next Study Group meeting and find out how to search for missing WebPages. Have a genealogy brick wall? Let the Study Group help you brainstorm your research options. Use our L-AGS Study Group forum for any genealogy topic discussion or computer interest questions. L-AGS is blessed with people willing to share their knowledge and expertise! E-mail the forum at: mailto: study.group@L-AGS.org. You can also post suggestions for future Study Group topics. ============================================================== U P C O M I N G C O N F E R E N C E S A N D S E M I N A R S ============================================================== October seems to be a good month for Genealogy Conferences.
